Mission and objectives
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board.
Context
We cannot find solutions if we do not fully understand the problems and data gaps that are impeding development progress. To this end, the United Nations and the agencies active in the Caribbean region are regularly in need of individuals who can assist improving access to quality, real-time demographic data, and gender analysis, to support evidence-based national sustainable development policies. Given the existing gaps ranging from data collection to quality and level of disaggregation according to established Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) criteria, the UN notes that addressing and closing the gaps identified are essential to ensuring that there is elimination of poverty, inequalities, discrimination, and exclusion, thereby attaining just, gender equitable, and sustainable populations and societies. The following skills are in high demand across the UN system: • Ability to use software for data monitoring, visualization, and statistical analysis. • Technical support to in areas such as Power BI, R, data visualization, and statistical analysis. • Data analysis and measurement methods and work to make data obtained from these measurements more comprehensible. • Ability to participate in the processes of data collection, cleaning, integration, pattern analysis, reporting, and presentation. • Skills to analyze large datasets and uncover trends. The Online Volunteer will play a vital role in enhancing UNV’s roster of individuals that could be called upon by UN agencies to assist with data gathering, analysis and visualization. Candidates are likely to have bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Statistics, Computer Programming, Software Engineering or related fields from an accredited academic institution. Similarly, candidates could hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Psychology, Social Work, Education, International Relations, Public Health, or a related development field with experience in strengthening data and statistics ecosystems. By developing this database, the Online Volunteers will help to inform and recruit new volunteers in the UNV platform, creating a roster that will help shape evidence-based national sustainable development policies to save lives and make meaningful progress on the SDGs in the Caribbean.
Task Description
The Online Volunteer will be assigned to undertake online research to develop database in excel form for organizations whose members could be recruited to support the UN agencies in the Caribbean. The final deliverable must be structured in an Excel file, ensuring that each organization is clearly categorized by theme and country. The information should include full names, titles, affiliations, LinkedIn profiles as a priority, and other social media handles if available for the leading management teams of each organization, including their human resources leads. The volunteer will also propose a practical and efficient tagging system within the Excel file to streamline the process of selecting organizations and individuals for specific assignments. The goal is to make the list immediately useful and accessible, allowing for quick reference and engagement with individuals with skills in data gathering, analysis and visualization. The Online Volunteers will have a weekly meeting with UNV Coordinating Team for the Caribbean region to understand the assignment. The Online Volunteers will also receive feedback on his/her collaboration and quality of work, certificate of appreciation upon successful completion of the assignment and will be given credit of support where applicable.
