Duties and Responsibilities
The services of two interns are needed to carry out research and analyses on Information Society, Digital Cooperation & Digital Development, to support the development of technical materials and the organization of events on related subjects. The interns will provide support to the digital cooperation & digital development tracks’ activities of Phase 2 of the “Advancing Digital Cooperation and Development – Arab States Action Programme” (ADCD-ASAP phase 2). The interns will work under the direct supervision of the ADCD-ASAP Project Coordinator and the designated project staff. In particular, the interns will be tasked to do the following: • Systematically follow through and retrieve, highlight and compile information on Information Society, Digital Cooperation & Digital Development related topics in the Arab region from a wide variety of information sources, prepare inputs on the subject as required; • Prepare statistical tables and graphs and assist in the preparation of presentations and background material in support of selected ADCD-ASAP Phase 2’s Digital Development & Digital Cooperation deliverables; • Assist in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity; • Contribute to convening a series of events in support of selected ADCD-ASAP Phase 2’s deliverables (e.g. Arab Digital Agenda_2.0 and associated documents), designing substantive and organizational documentation and handling all preparatory arrangements (conference room reservations, guests/participants lists, invitations, catering, seating arrangements, background documentation, special equipment, etc.); • Research, compile and summarize background materials for use in preparation of reports, briefs, speeches, etc.; • Use standard word processing package to produce a wide variety of large, complex documents and reports; • Draft and respond to a wide range of correspondence; • Assist in the preparation and the deployment of modern online tools and applications to encourage stakeholder collaboration in the area of digital cooperation and digital development; • Assist in proofreading documents and in reviewing the English and Arabic translation of selected ADCD-ASAP phase 2 deliverables; • Assist in monitoring progress in the implementation of ADCD-ASAP phase 2’s deliverables; • Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned. Outputs/Work assignment: • Provide substantive and general administrative support to selected ADCD-ASAP phase 2 deliverables. • Perform other duties as assigned. The duration of a United Nations internship is for a minimum of two months on a full-time basis – this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above); 2. Applicants must: (a) be computer literate in standard software applications. (b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and (c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Knowledge of Information Society, Digital Cooperation & Digital Development, and Economics and Sustainable Development Issues is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft office applications is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic & English is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Interns under these arrangements must commit to an equivalent of at least two months full-time work and complete their internship within six months.
Intern Specific text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
