Position Overview
This is a leadership role responsible for developing and managing PIH-US’ programs, accompaniment, and technical advising work in Massachusetts. The Director will drive strategy, set organizational and programmatic goals for PIH-US’s work in its three Massachusetts localities (Greater New Bedford, Greater Brockton, and Greater Boston) and lead a hybrid, growing team. The Director will expand upon PIH-US’ anchor partnerships and build new partnerships in Massachusetts, including with city and state government, community-based organizations, public health programs, healthcare providers, state-level nonprofit organizations and associations, and philanthropy. In addition, the Director will collaborate with PIH-US colleagues across the United States, as well as PIH’s colleagues globally, to bring learnings and insights from Massachusetts to national and international advocacy and communications initiatives, and to bring PIH’s cross-site learnings to Massachusetts. The Director will sit on PIH-US’s senior leadership team.
Responsibilities:
Massachusetts program and team management (50%)
- Manage and lead a team of 4-5 individuals.
- Provide strategic leadership, staff coaching, and administrative and managerial oversight in line with PIH workplace values.
- Develop staffing strategy and continually assess recruiting priorities to meet Massachusetts team needs.
- Guide and support implementation of ongoing Massachusetts workstreams.
- In Greater New Bedford, lead the team to expand and strengthen PIH-US’ existing partnerships accompanying the New Bedford Health Department with health equity and data strategies and programs; building innovative equity-focused partnerships and programs with community-based organizations; convening Health Equity Communities of Practice and working groups; and contributing to the expansion and formalization of a community health workforce. Support the team in identifying and expanding into additional accompaniment opportunities.
- In Greater Brockton, oversee a new Project Lead’s development of a partnership with a collective of five local health departments. Support the Project Lead in identifying and expanding into additional accompaniment opportunities in the region.
- In Greater Boston, oversee a new Project Lead’s management of a community-driven mental health program in partnership with PIH’s Cross-Site Mental Health team. Support the Project Lead in identifying and expanding into additional accompaniment opportunities in the region.
- Proactively identify and facilitate opportunities for Massachusetts teams to collaborate and share learnings and best practices with one another, with other local partners, and with the broader PIH-US and PIH teams.
- Oversee project budget management for PIH-US’ three Massachusetts localities, guiding local Project Leads to track Massachusetts-specific grants and spending, with support from PIH finance, grants and compliance teams.
- Oversee program operations, grant management, and compliance process management for Massachusetts localities.
- Oversee evaluation of project performance using appropriate key performance indicators and project metrics, in collaboration with local Project Leads and PIH-US’ learning and impact team.
Massachusetts strategy development and resource mobilization (30%)
- In close collaboration with the PIH-US Director of Programs and Executive Director, define an ambitious vision for PIH-US’s work within multiple localities in Massachusetts and lead ongoing strategy development, continually identifying new opportunities for PIH-US to add value and maximize impact in Massachusetts.
- In close collaboration with the PIH-US Director of Partnerships and Executive Director, as well as PIH’s Global Policy and Partnerships team, develop and sustain a resource mobilization plan to deepen and expand PIH-US’ work in Massachusetts, including assessing funding opportunities, contributing to proposal writing and budget development, and building and stewarding relationships with regional and local funders.
- Identify, assess, and decide upon possible expansion opportunities in additional Massachusetts locations and/or with additional partner organizations.
- Collaborate with PIH senior leadership, board, and funders to leverage existing local organizational and individual relationships to deepen PIH-US’ presence in Massachusetts.
National PIH-US strategy and communications (20%)
- Serve as a member of the PIH-US leadership team, ensuring strategic and operational alignment with PIH-US learning, advocacy, and communications priorities and programming.
- Collaborate with PIH-US communications team to tell the story of our work in Massachusetts for multiple audiences.
- Serve as a spokesperson for PIH-US in both internal and external engagement, including collaborating with and providing external reporting to funders and other partners, and contributing learnings and insights within PIH-US and PIH networks.
- Engage in national PIH-US advocacy and coalition-building efforts to advance the broader movement for health equity in the U.S.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in public health, public administration, business, or related field.
- 10+ years of professional experience in public health, nonprofit management, health program implementation, consulting, and/or other relevant field, including experience managing a team.
- Proven track record within the public health, community health, and/or other relevant landscape. Strong existing knowledge of and relationships with key stakeholders in Massachusetts.
- Exemplary strategic thinking skills; ability to think creatively around program objectives and the detailed steps necessary to achieve goals.
- Ability to motivate and inspire both internal teams and external stakeholders with a clear vision for PIH-US’ presence in Massachusetts; ability and humility to seek and incorporate diverse input and feedback into the development of a strategy to implement that vision.
- Experience stewarding donor relationships, both on grant management and new resource mobilization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to concisely communicate complex ideas in a manner that builds buy-in among diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment and to handle competing priorities simultaneously.
- Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills and ability to build strong professional relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and qualitative and quantitative analytical capabilities.
- Entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrated through prior experience working in start-up-like environments building new teams or programs and/or flexibility in the face of rapidly evolving scopes of work and new challenges.
- Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information and navigate sensitive, complex situations with discretion and compassion.
- Demonstrated commitment to health equity and social justice and to continual learning about equity issues.
- Ability to work in-person across multiple locations in eastern Massachusetts (this position will be a hybrid remote/in-person role).
