CARE seeks a Director who will lead a new Resource Development function, creating the vision, defining the business needs, developing the business processes, and managing the departmental priorities for CARE’s donor data systems. The Director of Development Data & Systems is responsible for ensuring that CARE’s fundraising technology meets the strategic needs of CARE’s complex and continually evolving fundraising strategy, partnering closely with IT to communicate Resource Development’s business practices and requirements; serve as a product manager; own vendor relationships with technology firms; and continually grow Resource Development’s use of its fundraising platforms and data quality over time, including CARE’s fundraising CRM (Salesforce) and related tools (Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Luminate Online).
The ideal candidate for this position is a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of end user business needs, deep familiarity with fundraising business practices and requirements, expert knowledge of the Salesforce platform in a nonprofit context, and experience leading fundraising technology and/or operations teams.
The Director reports to the AVP of Operations, Planning & Analysis in CARE’s Resource Development department, and works closely with the Information Technology and Finance teams, including a CRM Director role in IT responsible for overall maintenance of the Salesforce platform. This position manages a team of experts in business analysis, product management, training and support, fundraising data, and manages relationships with a number of technology service providers.
Note: CARE is currently undergoing an organizational assessment to create the Development Data & Systems team reporting to this Director. Our objective is to lay the groundwork for this project and then finalize the organizational design with the Director once the role is filled.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Strategy
- Grow the department’s effectiveness in its use of Salesforce and related fundraising technology over time, through system evolution that supports the execution of the fundraising strategy map.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with outside vendors and consultants (including but not limited to Salesforce, Cloud for Good, and various other technology and service providers) to facilitate issue resolution and prioritize ongoing projects.
Product Ownership
- In partnership with IT, own the Resource Development technology “product roadmap,” ensuring Resource Development’s needs are accurately described and translated from business case to technical solution.
- Oversee the launch of any new fundraising technology platforms including the onboarding, training, requirements gathering, solution design, testing, process documentation, and change management required for an efficient rollout to the Resource Development team.
- Serve as Resource Development’s subject matter expert and business owner with the IT CRM team in managing the Salesforce CRM and a range of other technology solutions.
- Suggest, advise and make decisions on how Salesforce and other fundraising-specific technology tools will be deployed for CARE’s fundraising teams.
- Drive process to identify and refine business process requests and operational objectives; review, analyze, and evaluate stakeholder needs. Gather information, define scope and feasibility and develop and oversee the implementation of technical solutions that minimize custom code.
- Utilize creative problem-solving skills to develop and implement technical solutions that address the organization’s challenges related to large data volume management.
User Support & Training
- Oversee, streamline and continually improve CARE’s approach to supporting CARE staff users, including evaluating, testing, and implementing database modifications and upgrades, and reviewing the latest application releases from Salesforce and other vendors to determine new features that are appropriate for end users.
- Partner with staff to understand business needs and provide thoughtful leadership in the adaptation of business processes to technology platforms.
- Oversee the Data & Systems training function, helping to prioritize and develop training content for current and new users, oversee the updating of documentation and training manuals, create new documents as needed, and participate in presentations to communicate system changes.
- Collaborate with department leadership to ensure that all Development staff are well trained on technology products, understand how to use, update, and report on CRM data in their domain area, and follow proper processes.
Data Quality
- Oversee the systems for testing, file imports, data hygiene, Salesforce updates/reporting, and day-to-day vendor data needs.
- Work with IT to co-manage all existing codes, fields, and triggers; coordinate the creation of new values and fields when needed to meet new strategies while improving overall database performance.
- Oversee data quality assurance and recommend solutions for resolving data quality concerns, performance issues, and end-user problems.
- In coordination with IT and the Constituent Services & Gift Processing team in Resource Development, identify areas for improvement in operating procedures for data imports.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience working in fundraising technology (Salesforce strongly preferred), database management, application support, data analysis, and/or business data analysis is required.
- 8 or more years in a leadership role with direct reports and people management responsibilities in matrix/seconded staff environment.
- Deep knowledge and experience in nonprofit fundraising and marketing practices.
- Salesforce Administrator certification highly desirable.
- Proven experience managing large volumes of data.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with project management tools and techniques.
- Ability to apply sound judgment and decision making.
- Ability to translate and communicate complex topics in a variety of forums, tailoring communications to effectively fit and influence technical and non-technical stakeholders across multiple business units.
- Hands-on experience with multiple product delivery best practices (e.g. Waterfall and Agile) and user-centered design and management methods such as Lean, Scrum, Continuous Integration, and Test-Driven Development.
