Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Office of Safety and Security Coordination (NSOC) is located in the Office of the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. Its mission is to ensure the technical consistency and effective coordination of the IAEA’s activities in the nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety and nuclear security programmes. NSOC comprises three Sections: the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section, the Networks Management and Partnership Section and the Safety Standards and Security Guidance Development Section.
Main Purpose
Reporting to the Deputy Director General of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, the Director ensures that the Office of Safety and Security Coordination provides, in close cooperation with NS entities, results-based programmatic responses to Member States’ priorities and the needs of the Nuclear Safety and Security Framework globally, in the areas outlined above. The Director also leads efforts to ensure strong coordination within the Department for consistency and efficiency purposes, in terms of working practices and technical matters, and promote synergies between nuclear safety and nuclear security within all technical divisions.
Role
The Director is: (1) a leader, providing strategic direction towards development and implementation in the corresponding programme areas in line with a results based approach, as well as promoting good performance, teamwork and close coordination within the Department, and creating an environment where staff can develop their skills and share knowledge and experience; (2) a principal adviser to the Deputy Director General on issues such as strategy, policy and emerging challenges in relevant areas, and on the relevant programmes to plan and deliver in response to the needs of Member States, as well as on strengthening coordination within the Department, to integrate a departmental approach based on divisional expertise; (3) a manager, acting in accordance with the IAEA’s values and ethical standards in making decisions regarding financial, human, information and knowledge resources; (4) ) a promoter and facilitator, communicating and coordinating activities within the department, with external stakeholders, and cooperating with other organizations and with other IAEA Departments as needed.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Master’s Degree – Advanced university degree in nuclear science or nuclear engineering, physics or a related subject (for instance on nuclear safety or security).
Bachelor’s Degree – A first level university degree with five additional years of relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience in a governmental or non-governmental body with broad experience in technical matters, human and financial resource management, coordination and organizational development. At least five of these years at the senior management or executive level.
Proven track record of excellent leadership and strong capability to build partnerships and effective networking.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $106023 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 50043*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
