Title of Assignment: Doctor of Medicine

Place of Assignment: Geneva Headquarters

Expected duration of assignment: Framework agreement, from 01/01/2024 to 31/12/2025, with the possibility of an extension for up to 5 years

1. Objective of the assignment    

The Medical Doctor acts as Medical Adviser to WIPO. He/she provides advice and services to the Administration of WIPO on medical issues, including the medical fitness of staff and other occupational health issues. He/she works in the WIPO Medical Unit, ensuring quality control, adherence to the Staff Regulations and Rules and related administrative issuances, and strict compliance with medical ethics and medical confidentiality.

The selected candidate will substitute the Medical Adviser during his/her short-notice and planned absences. He/she will provide support to the WIPO Medical Unit during specific health projects.

2. Deliverables/services

In coordination with the nurse and the assistant at the WIPO Medical Unit, He/She will perform the following principal duties:

a. Participates in the day-to-day running of the Medical Unit, guaranteeing the maintenance and confidentiality of medical records, and ensuring availability of drugs and medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment.

b. Undertakes day-to-day occupational health duties: pre-appointment, periodic medical examinations, prepare staff going on duty travel (providing medical clearance, travel kits, vaccinations, etc.).

c. Provides first aid assistance and treatment to staff in medical emergencies.

d. Refers staff to Medical Adviser or to outside specialists as necessary and follows up with the said specialists.

e. Advises the Medical Adviser on sick leaves, claims of service-incurred accidents or illnesses, and other staff health issues, requesting external expert advice when appropriate. Carries out, or designates external practitioners to carry out, the necessary medical examinations.

f. Organizes/participates in addressing work environment, occupational health issues and preventative health programs.

g. Collaborates in activities related to staff health and safety (visiting workstations and corporate catering facilities, checking of ergonomics and safety of workstations, study of nuisance to working conditions).

h. Participates in the response to a potential pandemic for the identification of cases, performs contact tracing, monitoring of cases and contacts, testing of suspect cases, provides training to staff in the prevention of the spread of the contagion, participates in the crisis response working groups, participates in the centralized medevac taskforce in collaboration with WHO for all the UN system.

i. Performs other related duties as required.

4. Profile (e.g. area of specialization/expertise, specific knowledge/skills/experience)

Medical background with experience in occupational health;
Medical clinical experience of 10 years and good medical network within the Geneva area would be an asset.
Strong skills in IT medical database: knowledge of EarthMed would be an asset.
Understanding of medical requirements for staff travelling on official mission worldwide;
Experience in the United Nations;
Sensitivity to multicultural background;
Discretion and ability to build confidence.

5. Duration of contract and payment

The contract is for two years from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025, with the possibility of a 3-year further extension. A framework agreement contract will be established, in the form of a retainer engagement, with work being on demand. Successful candidates are expected to be called upon when and as needed.

Applicants are requested to provide an indication of their remuneration expectations in Swiss francs (daily rate).
