Background

UN Women, founded on the vision of equality enshrined in the United Nations Charter, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, peace and security.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to UN Women Country Officers and other senior UN officials, as well as to visitors, demonstrating the utmost discretion and integrity, a sense of responsibility and an excellent knowledge of protocol and safety issues. The driver also demonstrates a customer-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, tact and an ability to work with people from different national and cultural backgrounds.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the driver may also be required to provide driving services to the office’s operations and program staff, consultants and experts, as well as to UN personnel on mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Providing safe and reliable driving services

  • Drive service vehicles for the transportation of UN Women staff, other senior officials, visitors, UN Women program and operations staff, and facilitate VIP missions ;
  • Deliver and collect mail, documents and other items to government offices, embassies, commercial establishments and UN offices;
  • Welcome official staff and visitors at the airport and arrange for visa and customs formalities, if required;
  • Check that all passengers are wearing seat belts at all times in the vehicle;
  • Supervise and ensure that all immediate measures required by rules and regulations are taken in the event of involvement in accidents;
  • Comply with UN Women guidelines and policies specific to employment, such as, but not limited to, the Vehicle Management Policy ;
  • Supervise and ensure that all vehicles comply with Minimum Operating Safety Standards (MOSS).

2. Correct use of the vehicle

  • Save money by driving responsibly;
  • Keep a daily log of vehicles, daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes, servicing, lubrication and repairs, and ensure that other drivers do the same;
  • Prepare and maintain vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

3. Daily maintenance of assigned vehicle

  • Ensure that all official vehicles are clean and in good working order at all times;
  • Carry out minor repairs and arrange for major repairs;
  • Change the oil, check the tires, lights, horn, clutch and brakes, and wash the car regularly;
  • Ensure that vehicles comply with minimum operating safety standards (MOSS).

4. Maintain and ensure the availability of all required documents/supplies

  • Maintain and ensure availability of all required documents/supplies, including vehicle insurance, vehicle records, office directory and city/country map, first aid kit and spare parts in assigned vehicle;
  • Ensure that all immediate measures required by rules and regulations are taken in the event of involvement in accidents.

5. Provide general administrative and logistical support as required

  • Assist office staff with archiving, photocopying and record keeping;
  • Assist with the mailing and distribution of publications and the payment of invoices, as required.

6. The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Functional Competencies:

  • Excellent driving skills;
  • Thorough knowledge of driving rules and regulations, driver protocol and courtesy, as well as local roads and conditions;
  • Strong defensive driving skills;
  • Competence in minor vehicle repairs;
  • Ability to be punctual.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification
  • Completion of secondary education is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
Experience
  • At least 2 years of experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy or UN system with a safe driving record.
Languages
  • Fluency in French is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable (English, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
