IFC is seeking an Extended Term (ET) Consultant – Senior Economics Editor to support the Economic Policy Research department, a new department in the Economics and Private Sector Development Vice Presidency Unit. This role will entail working with economists to produce flagship reports and to turn academic research papers into articles and other publications for a broader economics and business audience. The role will also entail creating compelling digital content that readers can easily digest and share, and that media outlets want to feature.
The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Director of the Department and will also work closely with editors and external communications officers in the IFC Corporate Communications as well as the Vice President of Economics.
The ET Consultant – Senior Economics Editor will be a motivated and dynamic professional with prior experience in economics writing and editing; experience in international development is a plus. They should have a high sense of team spirit and be prepared to work in collaboration with colleagues from around the world. The Department is based at IFC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., but the selected candidate can work remotely from anywhere. If she/he resides elsewhere, there would not be a need to relocate to Washington.
Duties and responsibilities
The roles and responsibilities of the position will include:
• Work with authors from around the world to edit and produce flagship economic research reports, articles, academic publications, blogs, and presentations.
• Ensure excellent quality across of the Departments publications and other outputs, adhering to all relevant IFC and World Bank Group style guidelines.
• Support every stage of the production process through outlining, drafting, revising, securing approvals, launch and distribution, working with research teams to devise engaging research concepts, captivating storylines, sharpened messages, and crisp writing.
• Edit articles and other shorter pieces of content, including blogs and op-eds for tier 1 global media, digital infographics. Provide guidance to produce charts and visuals that capture IFC analysis in innovative and dynamic ways.
• Work with the Vice President of Economics to write blogs and articles, and to advise on the Department’s publication pipeline.
• Work with other IFC communications professionals, including the Media & Digital team and the Executive Editor, in the creation of web content, social media assets and press and outreach materials.
• Participate in the delivery of group trainings and hands-on tutoring of economics researchers on structuring, elements of clear writing, and editorial topics.
• Where needed, work closely with the Executive Editor and communications teams on in-depth reviews, rethinking, or upgrading of editorial content and communications products.
Selection Criteria
• Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Economics or a related field, with 5 or more years’ experience in editing economics and business research.
• Big picture thinker, while maintaining a sharp eye for details.
• Excellent writing, editing, and message development skills.
• Broad knowledge of current events and trends in international and development economics, business, policy and technology, and a solid understanding of modern communications, including publishing trends.
• Proven ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with authors and with colleagues across functional departments, geographies, and disciplines through collaborative leadership skills.
• Ability to juggle multiple tasks, sometimes on tight deadlines.
• Commitment to the World Bank Group and IFC’s mission and values.
• Computer skills: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and major graphic design software.
