Reporting to the Head of the System Architect Office, you will be at the heart of tasks that will establish and maintain a reference architecture for European Earth observation (EO) systems. This will encompass research missions, operational missions, multilateral national and commercial systems, non-orbiting platforms and in situ assets. Your role will entail mapping the EO programmatic vision of Member States and stakeholders, exploring new and future EO domains with an observatory function, and conducting periodic observation gap analysis and impact studies. The aim of these activities is to support the formulation of the EOP strategy.

A master’s degree in engineering, mathematics or physics is required.
A minimum of five years’ experience in EO activities is required.
You should have a demonstrated ability for collection, analysis and synthesis of information of varying types (technical, scientific or economic) and from various sources.
A deep knowledge of synergies between complementary Earth observation techniques will be an asset. You will be familiar with current and future planned satellite missions, including instruments, technologies and user and stakeholder needs and plans, both at ESA and within relevant international programmes and commercial Earth observation entities. Particular importance will be attached to your ability to work closely with international experts and relevant scientific, industrial and political organisations and bodies and function in a team environment, as well as your level of familiarity with the programmatic outlook in the ESA FutureEO, Earth Watch and Copernicus domains.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

According to the ESA Convention, the recruitment of staff must take into account an adequate distribution of posts among nationals of the ESA Member States*. When short-listing for an interview, priority will first be given to internal candidates and secondly to external candidates from under-represented Member States*.
In accordance with the European Space Agency’s security procedures and as part of the selection process, successful candidates will be required to undergo basic screening before appointment conducted by an external background screening service.
In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
