Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Trade and Development (UNTD), Division on Globalization and Development Strategies (DGDS), Macroeconomic and Development Policies Branch (MDPB), in Geneva, Switzerland. The Economics Affairs Officer reports to the Head of the Branch.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the duties of the Economics Affairs Officer are: Economic or sector analysis: • Monitors and analyses trends in international markets and analyses their implications for macro-economic stability in developing countries and the global economy; identifies recurrent and emerging challenges of international economic integration faced by the developing economies and examines policy solutions for sustainable and equitable growth in developing countries. Contributes substantively to key research deliverables produced by the Branch. • Designs and conducts studies on the inter-relationship between trade and financial integration in developing economies and their strategies of integration into global value chains and drafts resulting reports. • Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to international economic integration and strengthening multilateralism. • Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures for presentation to intergovernmental bodies and others. • Attends international, regional, and national meetings to hold discussions with representatives of other institutions. • Takes part in expert group meetings, seminars, etc., on development issues. • Prepares speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff. Intergovernmental support: • Provides substantive support on economic issues to the Trade and Development Board. • Provides inputs for presentations at international, regional and national meetings. Technical cooperation: • Designs and monitors technical cooperation projects. • Undertakes missions to member states, either alone or as a participant in a diverse team, as part of the Organization’s technical cooperation activities. • Prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses that provide a basis for advising national governments on economic development issues. • Conducts training seminars and workshops for government officials and others. General: • Supports junior staff, reviewing their work and providing feedback. • Participates in intra- and inter-departmental undertakings of broader concern to represent the views or interests of the organizational unit. • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s service. • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education
Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, development studies, international business or political economy. A PhD in Economics or related discipline is desirable. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and data analysis, policy formulation, in particular in the area of financial, international and development economics, is required. Record of peer-reviewed research publications in major outlets is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
