1. Objective of the assignment
The WIPO Magazine is the Organization’s flagship outreach publication, bringing stories about cutting-edge topics related to intellectual property (IP) to a broad, non-specialist audience, in eight languages. The Editor will build the WIPO Magazine’s global reputation and audience, develop its digital presence, and maintain the high quality of its content.
Working with a broad team of in-house and external experts, the Editor will use WIPO’s own publishing platform to develop and publish the different language editions of the WIPO Magazine articles in HTML and PDF.
2. Deliverables/services
In consultation with and under the guidance of the Head of the Publications and Design Section:
• Produce the WIPO Magazine in eight languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese and Japanese), curating four quarterly editions per language per year and publishing articles online on a schedule of one every three weeks, with the support of a stable of talented writers and editors that you will build.
• Through careful commissioning, clear author guidelines, substantive peer review, professional editing and cutting-edge design, ensure the quality, distinctiveness and global relevance of the WIPO Magazine.
• Foster relations with other content creators and IP experts, inside and outside WIPO, to uncover new stories, cross-promote and repurpose content across different platforms, and share best practices.
• Work closely with the WIPO translation teams to ensure the timely delivery of the language editions of WIPO Magazine articles for our audiences.
• Develop and implement a strategy for the growth of the WIPO Magazine’s readership, including expanding dissemination and digital marketing.
• Under the supervision of the Head of Publications and Design, hire the best talent to deliver on budget and on schedule.
3. Reporting
The Contractor will report to the Head of Publications and Design.
4. Profile (e.g. area of specialization/expertise, specific knowledge/skills/experience)
Essential:
• At least 10 years managing digital and print editorial projects, including magazine publishing, with curation, commissioning and resource management responsibilities.
• Excellent understanding of IP issues and a keen interest in the topics of innovation and creativity
• Excellent knowledge of digital workflows
• Excellent writing and editing ability with facility in adapting content to different audiences and channels.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure.
• Ability to understand and convert complex issues and documents into clear, accessible content.
• Proven ability to build networks and manage virtual teams.
• Meticulous attention to detail.
• Diplomacy and political sensitivity.
Desirable:
• Experience in content creation in the setting of an international organization, ideally within the UN system.
• Experience in preparation of magazine content using digital workflows.
• Experience in handling publication workflows that include translation.
• Good understanding of the principles of open access.
• Good understanding of the principles of accessible publishing.

End date: December 31, 2024
12-months renewable
Activity rate: 40%
Applicants are requested to provide an indication of their remuneration expectations in Swiss francs (daily rate).
