The Norwegian Refugee Council has an interesting and rewarding opportunity to be part of our newest country of operation – Sudan.

Who Are We?  NRC is an International Non-Governmental Organization that operates in more than 30 countries. The main headquarter is in Oslo – Norway. NRC resumes its operation in Sudan on March 2020 and since then it has established different Area Offices in Gadarif, Fasher, Geneina, Kosti and South Kordofan. NRC is mainly involved in different core competencies such as Education, Protection, Wash, Shelter, Livelihoods and Food Security and Camp Management. The current Country Office is placed in Khartoum.

As a priority, NRC is therefore hiring Education Assistant, shall be part of establishing NRC’s programme in Sudan.

Role and responsibilities

Generic responsibilities 

  1. Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines, with strict adherence to the Code of Conduct and Child Safeguarding policies.
  2. Assist with the implementation of the Education portfolio.
  3. Prepare and develop status reports and other documents as required by management.
  4. Ensure proper filing of documents.
  5. Promote the rights of refugees, IDPs, returnees and the host community in-line with SPERE and INEE Minimum Standards
  6. Promote and share ideas for project and activity improvement.
  7. Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need using vulnerability criteria to support learner registration.

Specific responsibilities 

  1. Provide daily support to education incentive staff and teachers and supervise daily workers in line with program objectives and NRC quality standards.
  2. Ensure direct communication and feedback with beneficiaries and stakeholders at field level, with a focus on community leaders, headmasters/principals, teachers and students.
  3. Support teacher trainings as required by the project objectives.
  4. Lead in mobilization and sensitization of community members
  5. Assist with capacity building activities for beneficiaries, with a focus on teachers.
  6. Organize, support and participate in Mother’s Groups, PTAs, School Improvement Plans and School-Based Management Committees
  7. Regularly travel to the field to support education/PSS interventions and classroom/WASH construction activities; monitor and ensure regular needs for supplies are met.
  8. Organize and implement distributions of teaching and learning supplies and materials; maintain records of commodity movements and secure appropriate supporting documents.
  9. Ensure ongoing monitoring and reporting of project outputs/outcomes at field level per the M&E plan and donor requirements.
  10. Ensure complaints and feedback response mechanism is in place at field level.
  11. Ensure schools and learning spaces are safe for children and report all protection concerns immediately.
  12. Any other task relevant to the position as requested by the line and/or technical manager.

Critical interfaces:

  1. By interfaces, NRC means processes and projects that are interlinked with other departments/units or persons. Relevant interfaces for this position are:
  2. Project planning: Education Coordinator
  3. Area operations: Support Assistants
  4. Staff capacity building: Education Coordinator, Education Technical Officer
  5. Implementation: Education Coordinator, Shelter/WASH Officer, M&E Assistant

Scale and scope of position:

  1. Staff:  Line management of daily workers
  2. Stakeholders:          Key external stakeholders the post has relationships with: UN field teams, local MoE officials, NGO field teams, community leaders, headmasters and teachers, SBMCs/PTAs, students
  3. Budgets:       Not a budget holder
  4. Information: GORS, Bi-Weekly reports, Intranet
  5. Legal or compliance: Donor guidelines relating to Education projects, NRC Terms of Employment, NRC Security policy, NRC Code of Conduct, NRC Policies, NRC Standard Operating Procedures

Competencies:

Competencies are important in order for the employee and the organization to deliver desired results. They are relevant for all staff and are divided into the following two categories:

1. Professional competencies 

These are skills, knowledge and experience that are important for effective performance.

Generic professional competencies: 

  1. 2 Years Experience in a humanitarian/recovery context preferred.
  2. University degree in social sciences, arts, or any related field.
  3. Experience working in complex and volatiles contexts preferred.
  4. Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Outlook and Excel required.
  5. Ability to work diligently both independently and in a team setting required.
  6. Willingness to travel regularly to the field in under-resourced settings required.
  7. Fluency in English and Arabic, both written and verbal required.

Context/ Specific skills, knowledge, and experience: 

  1. Knowledge of the EiE context in Sudan is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of the circumstances needs and challenges displacement and conflict-affected refugee, host community, returnee and IDP children face preferred.
  3. Experience with EiE and formal basic education in a humanitarian context preferred.
  4. Experience working with children and/or educators preferred.
  5. Experience liaising with and mobilizing local and community stakeholders preferred.
  6. Field level experience with an NGO an asset
  7. Understanding of SPHERE and INEE Minimum Standards an asset
  8. Candidates with a university and/or advanced degree preferred; significant experience in the field of Education, PSS or Child Protection considered in lieu.
