Description

As part of the LISA team, in the Projects Department of the Science Directorate, you will report functionally to the LISA Spacecraft Engineering Manager.

LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is a mission comprising a constellation of three spacecraft tasked with detecting and measuring gravitational waves with precision. It will become the first ever space gravitational wave observatory. It will deliver world-class science and will have significant public and strategic impact. The mission itself is hugely complex, involving 19 institutes from ten European countries as well as a significant involvement by NASA that will provide telescopes, lasers and electrostatic dischargers under a partnership agreement with ESA.

ESA is responsible for the mission as a whole, including the procurement of three spacecraft and of the launch vehicle, and the development of the payload and ground segment. For LISA, ESA will take additional responsibility, leading payload system design and programmatic, including performance, responsibility.

The role of the LISA Electrical Lead is to coordinate the work of a team of engineers from the Directorate of Technology, covering power system, generation, storage and distribution, EMC and magnetism, harness, electrical engineering, radiation and EEE parts selection.

You will also work in close cooperation with the payload system team for all the electrical engineering work on the CFI units.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • managing the electrical subsystem, EMC and magnetic cleanliness requirements, all the electrical interfaces and related budgets;
  • managing the procurement of the power subsystem (power generation, distribution and storage) and harness;
  • supporting the procurement activities of the spacecraft subsystems and units in the areas of EMC, magnetic cleanliness, electrical engineering, and EEE part compatibility;
  • monitoring the development of the payload CFIs electrical design and related budgets;
  • managing the EMC and magnetic cleanliness programmes at spacecraft level, including the necessary support to the CFIs;
  • participating in the definition and implementation of the AIV programme for the verification of all electrical aspects, EMC and magnetic cleanliness;
  • support the product assurance activities in the area of EEE parts, radiation including support to part selection and control boards, as well as anomaly investigations and reviews.

Education

A master’s degree in engineering is required.

Additional requirements

Significant experience in leading complex Power subsystem and overall electrical engineering.

You should further have:

  • proven ability to coordinate the technical work of a group of engineers and to work within and across teams;
  • the ability to anticipate problems, solve complex issues and manage risks;
  • good interpersonal and communication skills;
  • proven ability to work in an autonomous, effective and cooperative manner in a diverse, international team environment;
  • the ability to define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines;
  • good analytical and organisational skills.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
