Energy Markets and Grids Campaigner

 

We, Beyond Fossil Fuels (BFF), are an alliance of passionate civil society groups committed to transforming the European energy sector. We strive for a just transition to a fossil-free, fully renewables-based energy system that protects people, nature, and our planet. As an independent campaign, we are driven by a fierce dedication to ending our reliance on coal by 2030 and fossil gas by 2035 with a focus on the power sector. With your help, we can create a brighter, cleaner, and more equitable future for all. This campaign is supported by a BFF secretariat, consisting of 26 people and spread across Europe.

 

We’re excited to be recruiting for the role of Energy Markets and Grids Campaigner. This role will support the development and coordination of campaigns targeting national and European level grid operators and energy regulators. The position focuses on building European and cross-national momentum to secure the electricity market design, grid planning and deployment required to accelerate renewables and other solutions, and to exit coal and gas.

  • Employment type: full-time, permanent staff contract
  • Locations we hire in: Germany, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Poland, France, Türkiye  or secondment from a European NGO that is a BFF partner.

 

 

Please note that we do not have the resources to relocate candidates to Europe from outside the continent.

Your responsibilities

  • Together with partner organisations, develop an agenda-setting and cross-national campaign strategy targeting grid operators and market regulators to accelerate the deployment of renewables, and the phase out of coal and gas;
  • Activate and support BFF partner organisations, especially at national level, as part of developing the strategy and implementing it;
  • Be a bridge between the partners working on policy advocacy and technical/policy work on power market design and campaigning organisations (which includes communications);
  • Plan and coordinate campaign pushes and campaign moments;
  • Identify gaps and put in place together with partners appropriate working structures, support and potentially co-convene working groups or task forces;
  • Monitor relevant political developments, produce briefings and campaign outputs;
  • Contribute to BFF secretariat internal planning and reporting.

 

 

Required skills & experience

  • At least four years of work experience of working on energy/climate/environment issues in non-governmental organisations;
  • At least three years of experience in developing narrative-driven campaign strategies and running campaigns;
  • A comprehensive understanding of the energy transition and its political and economic context in Europe;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, competency at facilitating and supporting the work of others, and the ability to build common cause and reach agreements among multi-organisational teams;
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely;
  • Highly organised and capable of balancing multiple priorities;
  • Confidence working remotely with a broad range of people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds;
  • Passionate about promoting a healthy, environmentally friendly, and fair society;
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

 

 

Desirable skills and experience

  • Knowledge of European energy markets and power grids;
  • A track record of successful campaigning;
  • Experience of working in environments with limited space for civil society;
  • Fluency in other European languages.
