Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services. This post is located in the Nairobi duty station, the Facility Management and Transport Section (FMTS) within Central Support Services of the Division of Administrative Services, UNON. Under the supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the following; Responsibilities • Support in the daily administrative process and execution of environmental affairs and initiatives like e.g. waste disposal, review of the condition of the infrastructure (Solar panels, sewage and freshwater system, garbage bins, etc. • Conduct complex-wide surveys on environmental matters like e.g. electricity consumption, water consumption, rainwater runoff for the purpose of water harvesting and related topics in coordination and with the support of the environmental sustainability officer. • Supports in preliminary investigations to retrieve data and plan bases. Ideally, this data should then be used by the candidate to carry out commonly used engineering calculations to design and create specifications among others together with the env. engineer. • Supports in the production of awareness raising and information materials for environmental topics and concerns like e.g. interviews, workshops, posters, presentations and the presentation & roll out of the same. • Propose creative ideas and ways to reduce UNON’s environmental footprint in its duty to offer services and buildings.
Qualifications/special skills
Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, environmental technology or related sciences Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
