Description

Avionics System Engineer in the ESM Engineering Team, ESM Team, Lunar Exploration Group, Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes, assigned as integrated support from the On-Board Computer and Data Handling Systems Section , Data Systems and Microelectronics Division, Electrical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The European Service Module (ESM) is a crucial European contribution to the Artemis cooperative exploration mission with NASA. It serves as currency to pay for ESA’s common systems operations costs (CSOC) in the framework of the ISS programme and also contributes to the Gateway cooperation. The ESM, in short, will play an essential role in taking European astronauts to the Moon.

As ESM Avionics System Engineer, you will be in charge of the ESM activities in the field of avionics and power systems. You will report directly to the Head of the ESM Engineering Team.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • interfacing with NASA in the domains of ESM avionics and power;
  • supporting the development and maintenance of the ESM bilateral technical baseline;
  • monitoring and controlling the industrial activities on the establishment of the avionics and power technical baseline and the related design, development and verification activities;
  • monitoring the production of avionics and power hardware units, their integration in the ESM and the associated testing;
  • coordinating the required joint NASA-ESA testing activities for avionics and power;
  • supporting the test platforms in Europe (ESM-QF, Les Mureaux, France) and in the US (ITL, Denver, Colorado) and their maintenance and evolutions, as well as the execution of the electric test campaigns;
  • coordinating the ESM post-delivery activities and sustaining engineering in the field of avionics and power, including the integration, test and launch campaign in the US;
  • supporting the Orion flight operations as a member of the Mission Evaluation team, for the position of Communication and Data Handling;
  • coordinating ESA functional support for avionics and related disciplines: power, electromagnetic compatibility and radiation effects;
  • supporting, in coordination with the relevant members of the ESM Engineering Team, the design, qualification and production of ESM hardware for the electrical aspects;
  • supporting the System Engineer in avionics and related disciplines in the event of contract change notices, non-conformances and waivers in the ESM Engineering Change Board.

You will also participate in periodic meetings with the parent Division, contributing to the transfer of technical knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency.

Education

A master’s in physics or engineering is required for this post.

Additional requirements

Professional experience in spacecraft development in the domain of avionics with a good understanding of power systems.

Knowledge of human-rated space flight systems and the Orion ESM programme are highly desirable, as is experience of inter-agency and international cooperation.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
