Description

European Astronaut Centre and Astronaut Communication Officer, in the Contents Office, News, Content & Community Engagement Division, Communication Department, assigned as Integrated Support to the LEO Exploration Group, Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration.

You are reporting hierarchically to the LEO Exploration Group Leader and functionally to the Human and Robotic Exploration Communication Programme Officer and will be responsible for the communication and public relations of the ESA astronauts and the European Astronaut Centre.

Your main responsibility will be to develop and execute communication activities involving ESA astronauts. As such, you will support the ESA Content Office by ensuring, in close liaison with the Human and Robotic Exploration Communication Programme Officer, strategic communication and event organisation in support of campaigns relating to the European Astronaut Centre and space missions of European astronauts. You will be responsible for defining, executing, monitoring and improving all communication activities of the European Astronaut Centre, including space missions of ESA astronauts. In fulfilling these tasks, you will be supported by a small team of communication experts.

Duties

  • Establishing and implementing the Annual Communication Plan for the European Astronaut Centre (thereby contributing to ESA’s Annual Communication Plan) and specific communication plans for ESA astronaut missions;
  • Participating in the ESA Coordination Meeting to contribute to an up-to-date, consolidated publishing agenda reflecting the communication interests of ESA and Human and Robotic Exploration;
  • Managing the online presence of the European Astronaut Centre, including the ESA portal, with a focus on news production;
  • Managing the social media communication of the European Astronaut Centre in accordance with the ESA social media policy based on a cross-media approach including live social TV formats;
  • Supporting corporate media relations, identifying and training a group of spokespersons for the European Astronaut Centre;
  • Supporting the implementation of news conferences, exhibition participation and public relations events by working in close cooperation with corporate media relations and the Exhibitions Unit;
  • Providing the content necessary for the production of brochures, leaflets, posters, factsheets and media kits;
  • Ensuring a bottom-up information flow regarding content relevant for communications in the Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented communication activities in close cooperation with the Newsroom based on agreed key performance indicators and taking continuous action to improve delivery as required.

Technical competencies

Education

A master’s degree in communication or related fields for this post is required.

Additional requirements

Significant experience in communication in an international environment.

Knowledge of space science, space technology, space transportation and space engineering and operations, as well as proven experience in communication strategy and planning and campaign management, delivering across all channels.

Knowledge of resource management, as well as web development, usability and analytics, is an advantage.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
