Duties and Responsibilities
Background: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is jointly implementing with other UN regional commissions and entities, a project aimed at supporting post-COVID-19 recovery through a food-water-energy nexus. The project is being led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and it is entitled “Food-Water-Energy nexus support to post-COVID-19 recovery in Eastern Europe, Western Balkans, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa”. Duties and responsibilities: Under the overall supervision of the Cluster Leader and direct follow up from the Chief of Food and Environment Policies of the Climate Change and Natural Resources Sustainability Cluster, the expert would be responsible for the following overall duties, namely: • Conduct desk review and consultations with national stakeholders to identify market opportunities and readiness for e-commerce, marketing problems, inefficiencies in distribution process. • Develop guidelines/stepwise process to optimize the use of digital marketing and e-commerce tools to reduce food loss thus enhancing food systems and improving livelihoods. The guidelines should be prepared in Arabic, accompanied by an extended comprehensive executive summary in English. They should be designed in a way to include a systemic methodology to benefit from enablers and overcome barriers facing the initiation and viability of ecommerce platforms, in addition to a stepwise process guiding farmers to invest and succeed in marketing agricultural and agro-industrial products through online e-commerce platforms. • Contribute to national consultation meetings in Algeria and Iraq and attend the regional meeting to present the regional guidelines when the meeting dates are set.
Qualifications/special skills
A Master’s degree or higher in agriculture, agro-economics, food security, marketing, digital marketing, or related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 10 years of professional work experience in agriculture, agro-economics, food security, marketing, digital marketing, or any other relevant related field is required. Experience of work in the Arab region is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Word is required. Proven record of published items covering the topics of agricultural e-commerce and marketing, food loss and waste, food security, and sustainable development in the Arab region is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
