Job Description

Be part of Save the Children’s Back on Track program, an NT government initiative which aims to prevent youth crime, divert young people away from the youth justice system and provide alternatives to detention. We need you to join a dedicated team to maximise the impact of our programs on the lives of young people, so we’re seeking someone with a passion for assisting our communities’ most vulnerable youth.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

A place where your purpose matters. Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

It takes all types of personalities and talents to drive our organisation– yours included. We value a healthy work-life balance and ensure our people feel connected to each other and our impact. Learn from inspiring people and grow from a connection to our strong local and global networks. From our programs to our support services – this is the place to realise your purpose.

A place to make a difference:

Here you’re empowered to make a difference in children’s lives by learning, sharing and collaborating to find new ways to solve problems.

In this full-time, maximum-term position (to January 14th, 2025), based in Katherine, you’ll work with the Back on Track team to deliver family support services to young people, drive community and cultural connections, and promote positive approaches to parenting and family wellbeing. As part of our NT Programs Team, you’ll report to the Team Leader.

You will make a difference by:

  • Providing group and individual support to families from a child centred approach
  • Building strong, lasting connections with people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Supporting families to access the assistance they need, when they need it
  • Actively encouraging vulnerable, detached or fearful families to engage with our programs
  • Establishing relationships with the local community to mobilise and build capacity
  • Collecting and recording data

A place to feel valued

You’re an enthusiastic and committed practitioner experience working alongside young people and families to achieve agreed outcomes. You take a strengths-based approach, and you have a true ability to empathise with people from all walks of life. Importantly, you’re highly developed cultural awareness and sensitivity, partnered with your excellent communication skills, will enable you to build community networks and lasting relationships.

We recognise your contribution and provide you the support to ensure you can bring your best, knowing here you have the space and opportunity to grow.

Bringing your best every day, means having:

  • Degree/Diploma in a relevant field such as Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or Social Sciences, or significant equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience in working with culturally diverse communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and young people who have had contact or were at risk of having contact with the justice system
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish goals collaboratively with families
