INTRODUCTION

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. The organization has offices across the region and has been operational in Ethiopia since 2009. With funding from bilateral and multilateral donors, DRC is currently implementing a range of activities across Ethiopia and Djibouti, including WASH and shelter provision, child and youth protection, gender-based violence response, awareness-raising of migration risks, protection monitoring of migration routes, and livelihoods support for returning migrants or those at-risk of migration.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

In July 2024 DRC will launch a humanitarian mine action programme, initially composed of NTS and explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) in Northwest and Central Zone in Tigray, Ethiopia. DRC is therefore looking for a dedicated Field Medic to support the launch and implementation of a new project beginning in July.

The overall role of the field medic is to provide medical support to DRC NTS field teams and medical advisory to HDP humanitarian mine action operations.

Responsibilities:

DRC HDP field medic shall:

  • To provide emergency medical aid to deployed teams at IMAS ICP level
  • To provide assistance and support to deployed teams on all medical concerns
  • To provide operations manager with oversight of all medical issues.
  • Ensure that the NTS teams are adequately equipped and trained as by DRC HDP SOP on Medical Support in Mine Action.
  • Ensure that they are able to carry out their duties in a professional manner.
  • Shall ensure that all staff are qualified to carry out their duties in support of clearance operations within the definition of qualified personnel.
  • Maintain reporting mechanisms and produce proper records and reports on all aspects of medical activities according to the requirements of the DRC HDP SOP Medical Support in Mine Action.
  • To conduct regular casualty evacuation (CASEVAC) exercises together with the TA and DS.
  • To provide direction and supervision to DRC HDP personnel with regards to health issues.
  • Support the operations manager in investigating accidents/incidents and compile relevant reports.

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Minimum 2 years Diploma in Nursing
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Previous experience in NTS or other mine action specialism is desirable
  • Experience working for non-governmental organizations is an asset
  • Experience and willingness to work in the field in remote and volatile areas
  • Knowledge of current health care legislation and regulations.
  • Fluent in Tigrigna, Intermediate level of English.
  • Confident user in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

EDUCATION: (include certificates, licenses, etc.)

  • Degree in Nursing
  • 2 years Diploma in Nursing certificate

LANGUAGE: (indicate fluency level)

  • Tigrigna
  • English language (verbal and written)
