CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. Program Summary

CHAI has launched an ambitious effort to scale-up access to treatment for diarrhea and pneumonia, which combined, kill over 1.5 million children every year. Working with the governments of five high-burden countries and leading global institutions, CHAI’s Essential Medicines (EM) team is supporting intensified efforts at both global and country levels to plan, resource, and implement effective interventions for scaling-up access to treatment for these conditions – specifically zinc and ORS for diarrhea, and amoxicillin and oxygen for pneumonia. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Essential Medicines team has expanded its oxygen work to over 20 countries, supporting pandemic response efforts while strengthening long-term oxygen systems planning.

The Global Essential Medicines Team works across the CHAI matrix to support the application of global learning and best practices and provide thought-partnership and technical assistance to programs implemented by in-country teams who own our valued relationships with partner governments and who possess critical knowledge of local context and operating conditions. Underlying our approach is our commitment to achieving sustainable, transformational change at scale by working in a way that strengthens health systems and government capabilities.

Position Summary

We are seeking to hire a Finance Analyst to support the day-to-day finance functions of the Global EM team to ensure smooth operations and timely responses to requests for information. This will include supporting various activities such as processing invoices, upkeep of financial tools, review of financials and drafting of variance explanations, and support with donor finance deliverables. The Finance Analyst will report to the Global EM Associate Director, Finance & Operations and is expected to operate in a fast-paced environment, often working under tight donor-driven deadlines.

Key measures of success in this role include: timely and accurate reporting on project costs; detailed understanding of variances to budget and forecast and communication of that information to non-finance partners; effective and proactive partnering with our internal clients and external partners; a demonstrated command of the underlying operational and financial content of the projects supported; proactive identification and resolution of the accounting, financial planning, and financial compliance issues; and an ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization with multiple stakeholders.

This position may be based in a program country, pending leadership approval.

Responsibilities

Grant Management

  • Support in creating comprehensive budgets for new grant proposals (or re-budgeting of existing grants) that meet both internal CHAI requirements and external donor requirements.
  • Review and support in preparing donor deliverables such as financial reports and invoices.
  • Support in both grant kick-off and grant close-out activities to ensure there is smooth communication of compliance requirements across the Global EM team and other teams, as is relevant.
  • Support in review and tracking of donor-required timesheets, as applicable, and in updating monthly salary allocation records to align with approved timesheet data. Analyze monthly donor financials to ensure alignment between posted expenses and approved timesheet allocations.

Monthly Financial Review and Annual Budgeting

  • Review monthly transactions and identify and draft necessary adjustments.
  • Analyze monthly variances of operational expenses to budget and work with Managers and Directors to provide variance explanations and to make ongoing adjustments to financial plans based on variances.
  • Support the annual budgeting and semi-annual reforecasting process to ensure consistency and accurate reflection of programmatic goals given the financial resources available.
  • Ensure timely submission of routine requests from finance, including the monthly salary allocation file and monthly variance explanations.

Operations Evaluation and Financial Planning

  • Contribute to creation and maintenance of financial models to track expenditure and generate forecasts to help drive programmatic decisions.
  • Ensure the Global EM team has the relevant finance information they need to track travel budgets and charge expenses.
  • Identify, investigate, and implement potential operational improvements.

Other

  • Maintain confidential records, such as employee information (specifically salary and benefit information) and financial information (budgets and allocations).
  • Help coordinate audit documentation and response collection as needed.
  • Communicate effectively in a matrixed work environment across various stakeholders.
  • Perform other programmatic/operational duties as requested.
  • Option to travel internationally 1-2 times per year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of work experience
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills, proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to synthesize information and evidence into effective deliverables for a broad range of audiences
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and maintain deadlines while working in a fast-paced, limited-structured environment
  • Maintains the highest ethical standards

Preferred

  • Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting or related field
  • Prior experience with an international non-profit/NGO
  • Familiarity with financial systems, budgeting, compliance, accounting best-practices, expense recording and reporting
