The front-end developer, with some back-end experience, is expected to implement and deliver efficient, high-performing front-end functionalities for IMEO web tools, including OGMP reporting applications, MARS notifications, Plume Viewer, and the Eye on Methane data platform. Performance will be evaluated based on adherence to roadmap deadlines, software quality, and team collaboration, while ensuring new features are delivered and deployed in Azure Docker containers.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The International Methane Observatory (IMEO), within the UNEP Climate Change Division, exists to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to the individuals with the agency to reduce methane emissions. UNEO IMEO provides a digital end to end solution to its power users, oil and gas sector, governments as well as providing data and transparency to media. The tools are currently in prototype or beta mode and will need to be progressed to deliver for a product-market fit. The front-end developer with expected back-end experience will collaborate on development and maintenance of all IMEO systems that serve content-oriented web pages and digital tools for IMEO. Within the team’s agile workflow, the consultant will be developing features, optimizing existing content, and evolving IMEO’s stack to meet stakeholder needs as well as working on several tools and sub-projects that form part of the IMEO ecosystem. The consultant will also need to work closely with different product teams to collaborate and iterate on product features and functionalities but also assist with back-end requirements as required. The Business, Science, Data and Engineering teams work closely together at every phase of product development from research and inception to release and maintenance. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Develop new features and maintain our React / Next.js website and tools + Update backend Node.js code and systems as necessary to help evolve our content ecosystem to meet product needs *Assist on back-end related tasks ranging from API development and integration, performance optimization on DB queries and API response, error handling. * Produce well-tested, maintainable code that follows design guidelines and best practices + Participate in the Agile development process to help architect, build, and ship new features * Work closely with remote and international teams
Qualifications/special skills
+ 5 or more years working on a Front-end team working closely with design, product, and QA. * Strong understanding of frontend web development patterns. Experience working on varied tech stacks which can include React, Docker, and Next JS. * Experience with tile servers, GIS and maps (Mapbox, MapLibre, UN maps) * Experience representing large amount of geospatial data * Experience in authorization and user privileges * Demonstrated experience in back-end tasks, like error logging, API creation and integrations is expected.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in English is required.

The IMEO digital ecosystem has a number of digital properties that feed into each other: ● OGMP Reporting Platform ● Plume Viewer ● MARS notification system ● IMEO Eye on Methane data platform (public tier 3 live, with tiers 1 & 2 MVPs scheduled for launch in 2025) ● OGMP communications website ● IMEO’s public website and communication channels The 2025 roadmap will be aggressive with multiple iterations and versions across applications released in parallel. The consultant will be required to implement and deliver front end efficient, well-performing functionalities on IMEO web tools per the roadmap. Performance will be evaluated accordingly to the capability of respecting roadmap deadlines, quality of the delivered software, collaboration with the team.
