Organizational Setting
The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology (NEFW) comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, the Waste Technology Section, the Decommissioning & Environmental Remediation Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.
The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section (NFCMS) assists interested Member States in the development of safe, environmentally friendly, economically viable, proliferation-resistant and sustainable fuel cycle options and it encourages information exchange on the exploration, mining and processing of uranium and thorium, on the design, manufacturing and performance of nuclear fuels, on the management of spent fuel, and on the development of advanced and innovative nuclear fuels and fuel cycles.
Main Purpose
As a member of a team reporting directly to the Section Head, the Fuel Cycle Facilities Specialist works closely with appropriate technical departments within the IAEA, especially the Nuclear Safety and Security Department, to integrate inputs received continually from Member States, other members of the international community and the Board of Governors into programme design and implementation of the Section’s activities on the operation and life management of nuclear fuel cycle facilities (e.g., instrumentation & control, quality control measurements, environmental impact, etc.). The incumbent will contribute to the implementation of projects’ activities focused on nuclear fuel cycle facilities (from the front to the back-ends), by monitoring information databases and developing innovative tools to share and disseminate relevant information.
Role
The Fuel Cycle Facilities Specialist is: (i) a project developer and implementer, contributing specialized knowledge and experience to the planning and development of the IAEA’s programme; (ii) a (co)scientific secretary planning and leading Consultancy and Technical Meetings, and monitoring information databases; (iii) a technical and project officer, assessing and assisting TC projects; and (iv) a technical specialist advising senior managers on project related issues.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Contribute specialized knowledge and experience to the planning, development and implementation of the IAEA’s activities on the technical operation and life management of nuclear fuel cycle facilities (e.g., I&C, quality control measurements, environmental impact, etc.), by planning and leading moderately complex Consultancy and Technical Meetings, seminars, workshops, and training courses bringing together international experts to prepare state-of-the-art and best practice reports in the areas of operation and life management of nuclear fuel cycle facilities, and to the collection of international recommendations and guidance, with a view to addressing Member States’ specific needs.
In close consultation with the Technical Lead, animate the Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities.
Maintain the databases of the Post Irradiation Examination and the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Facilities databases (PIE-DB and NFCF-DB) and develops innovative tools, such as the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Simulation System (NFCSS that models fuel cycle scenarios) to increase efficiency, strengthen impact and reach-out of Agency’s work.
Assist with TC projects by organizing expert missions, scientific visits, fellowships, and workshops to develop capacity building in Member States, action plans and procurement plans to address Member States’ needs.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Bachelor’s Degree – University degree in nuclear engineering, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear fuel cycle facilities, or other related field.
Minimum five years of hands-on (operational) experience in the operation and/or life management of nuclear fuel cycle facilities (front to back-end), of which two years of experience in the management of moderately complex operational projects.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $64121 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 37126*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
