Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director (ODG/OED), Policy and Inter-Agency Coordination Team (PIACT), Gender Team, United Nations Office at Vienna/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC). The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the Chief of ODG/OED and Strategy Advisor to the Executive Director, and reporting to the Programme Officer (Gender) as first reporting officer and to the Programme Coordinator as second reporting officer. Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a universally agreed objective—deriving from the Charter of the United Nations, which unequivocally reaffirmed the equal rights of men and women—and is confirmed in a number of commitments taken through, among others, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women of 1979, the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, various resolutions and decisions of the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 5 (“To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”). Gender equality is the overarching and long-term development goal, to be achieved on the programmatic side through gender mainstreaming in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all policies and programmes, and in the United Nations Secretariat by aiming at achieving a 50/50 gender balance in staff at all levels. While UNOV and UNODC undertake a number of activities to promote gender equality, in terms of both gender mainstreaming and gender balance in staff, an institutional framework and a systematic, coordinated approach to promote gender equality needs to be developed and subsequently implemented to address deficiencies and enhance progress towards gender equality. In May 2017, a Global Programme entitled Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in UNOV and UNODC (GLOW25) was established in the Office of the Director-General/Executive Director (ODG/OED), United Nations Office at Vienna/United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC). The objective of the project is for UNOV and UNODC to achieve gender equality by promoting it in a coordinated and comprehensive way. To that end, such an approach will be developed and its implementation be supported, including the mainstreaming of gender equality into the normative and programmatic work of UNODC and the pursuance of gender parity in UNOV and UNODC staff at all levels. The approach will be aligned with United Nations system-wide policies, guidelines and targets on gender equality. For detailed information on our work, please visit www.unodc.org/gender Daily responsibilities will vary and depend on the intern’s background. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Contributing substantively and logistically in organizing and planning of capacity building workshops, expert group meetings and presentations for partners and stakeholders on the topic of gender in the context of UNODC mandate areas. • Contributing substantively and logistically in organizing and planning of awareness raising events and communication campaigns on social media and the website for gender in UNODC mandate areas. • Preparing advocacy and information material(s) for a variety of partners and stakeholders—including UNOV/UNODC senior management, heads of Field and Regional Offices of UNODC, Member States and other senior officials. • Contributing substantively and logistically in organizing and planning of UN-system inter-agency activities, including and not limited to International Gender Champions Initiative, Friends of Gender, Vienna Discussion Forum and gender mainstreaming activities. • Providing logistical support to the male engagement in gender equality initiative at UNODC • Assist in drafting and preparing presentations, newsletters and reports. • Undertake other tasks and activities as requested.
