Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

Position Overview
We are looking for experienced and detail-oriented Generator Coordinators to oversee the efficient operation and maintenance of our hospital’s generators. The ideal candidates will lead the generator management team, scheduling shifts and managing duties rotation. They will coordinate with other departments for power changeovers and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, they will maintain inventory of spare parts, coordinating with procurement and engineers when needed. As the primary point of contact with hospital management and team heads, they will communicate effectively during shift changes and report major issues to the MEP Engineer. They will also maintain comprehensive documentation of generator operations, maintenance activities, and performance metrics, preparing reports as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the starting, stopping, and monitoring of generator operations to ensure continuous power supply throughout the hospital.
  • Conduct regular checks and inspections during generator operation to identify and address any potential issues promptly.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to alarms or unusual operating conditions, implementing appropriate actions to maintain generator performance.
  • Ensure that preventive maintenance tasks are performed according to schedule to uphold the reliability and efficiency of the generators.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the generator house to create a safe working environment for staff and ensure optimal generator performance.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of operational parameters and any issues encountered during generator operation.

Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Execute scheduled preventive maintenance tasks in accordance with established guidelines to prevent downtime and ensure the longevity of the generators.
  • Troubleshoot and repair any faults or malfunctions that occur during generator operation, utilizing technical expertise to resolve issues promptly.
  • Coordinate with the MEP Engineer to assess and prioritize major repairs or replacements as necessary to maintain generator functionality.
  • Document and keep records of all maintenance activities thoroughly and accurately, providing detailed reports to the MEP Engineer for analysis purposes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • Schedule shifts and manage the rotation of duties within the generator management team.
  • Coordinate with other departments for power changeovers, ensuring seamless transitions and minimal disruptions.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols, providing guidance and oversight to the team to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain inventory of spare parts and coordinate with procurement and MEP engineer when needed to ensure adequate resources for maintenance and repairs.

Qualifications/Requirements
Technical Competencies

  • National Diploma or equivalent education in Mechanical / electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in operating and maintaining generators with a minimum 3 years in leadership role, preferably within a hospital or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety practices relevant to generator operation.
  • Proficient in conducting basic troubleshooting and monitoring tasks related to generator maintenance and operation.

Supervisory Competencies:

  • Ability to guide and direct the generator team effectively, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and goals are achieved.
  • Ability to work closely with other departments.
  • Ability to manage spare parts inventory and coordinate with procurement to ensure necessary resources are available for maintenance and repairs.
  • Capable of resolving issues efficiently and making effective decisions to keep operations running smoothly.
  • Capable of communicating effectively (oral and written) with team members and stakeholders, fostering open communication and positive relationships.
