Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is in the Engineering Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Torit. Torit is classified in the “E” category and as a non-family duty station. The Generator Technician will report to the Chief Engineer.
Responsibilities
Under general supervision by the Chief Engineer, the Generator Technician FS4 will be responsible for the following duties: Operations • Install, service, maintain and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, power generating sets. • Diagnose technical faults and carry-out remedy for malfunctioning or defective power generating equipment, including installations. • Operate a wide variety of tools and power equipment including saws, drills, common workshop machinery, voltage testers, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, welding/soldering equipment and other tools and equipment. • Capable of operating heavy machines, excavator, backhoe, front loader and forklift. • Perform diagnostics and preventive maintenance of power generating sets. • Perform technical or other assessments of generating sets or buildings and prepare technical or other reports. • Apply and ensure adherence to safety programmes related to the safe operation of generating sets or power tools and equipment of the building and maintenance trade. • Conduct in-house training to tradesmen and artisans on the emerging technical skills in the new installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy. • Review and recommend for approval work orders and assign day to day repair and maintenance tasks to tradesmen and technicians being supervised. • Inspect and report on project work and maintenance work carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision and ensure proper utilization of available resources. • Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for construction projects, installations, and upgrade repair of infrastructure. • Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance. Administration • Maintain records relating to inventories, work orders and general correspondence. • Prepare bills of quantities and costing for infrastructure projects. • Assist in carrying out technical assessments of existing buildings and infrastructure. • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for infrastructure projects and maintenance programmes. • Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals for construction projects. • Provide inputs periodically for assessment of performance levels of assigned local and international staff and contractors. • Alert the Supervisor of Unit/Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to occur. • Monitor the overall project progress and the project schedule and submit weekly reports. • Produce CAD drawings required in planning and designing specifications of UNMISS facility-related projects. • Identify and manage risks in order to achieve the maximum benefit for the stakeholders and final users. • Manage repair and maintenance of the facilities. • Review the BOQ, cost estimates, drawings, Statement of Works, technical specifications, and bidding documents for QIPs projects outside UNMISS Camp. • Undertake frequent site visits to follow up on the project activities and advise on technical matters and provide advice about avoiding future difficulties in implementation. My duties in UNMISS include managing. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Section Chief.

Education
High school or equivalent diploma is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
Technical or vocational certificate in a trade (generator, power supply, electrical, etc) is required.
Work Experience
At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing generator sets/power supply installations or electrical equipment and installations is required. Experience in international operations in a post conflict environment is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required.
