The incumbent will be responsible to deliver the following:

• To collate large sets of quantitative and qualitative Geo-Statistical data at different scales and coverage on the Arab Region.
• Facilitate the design of a Regional Geo-Statistical Accounting Frame.
• To help with data analytics, edits, estimation, imputation, and quality control. To help expand ESCWA’s Geo-Statistical data clearinghouse.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Statistics, Information Society and Technology Cluster at ESCWA is looking to expand ESCWA’s Geostatistical Laboratory and to maximize the utility of ESCWA’s Geographic Information System (GIS) assets towards the integration of social, economic, and environmental for the Arab Region. As well as to consolidate ESCWA’s geostatistical framework and to fill in data gaps. The focus is on enhancing geo-statistical data acquisition and dissemination and on showcasing user-centric analytical capabilities for capacity-building and knowledge sharing activities.

General Duties: To collate large sets of quantitative and qualitative Geo-Statistical data at different scales and coverage on the Arab Region. To facilitate the design of a Regional Geo-Statistical Accounting Frame. To help with data analytics, edits, estimation, imputation, and quality control. To help expand ESCWA’s Geo-Statistical data clearinghouse.

The individual contractor will be responsible for the following:
• Examine, quality control, and quality assure ESCWA’s Geo-Statistical Databases.
• Identify regional, national, and subnational Geo-Statistical data.
• Develop efficient data collation methods.
• Develop and populate geo-statistical databases.
• Document the quality, accuracy, and consistency of data.
• Develop and implement geo-statistical edits and imputations.
• Contribute to the development of Geo-Statistical indicators.
• Produce GIS maps, stories, charts, and infographics.
• Facilitate information sharing among team members.

Qualifications/special skills

A PhD in Engineering, Geography or related area is required.

All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
A minimum of 6 years of professional work experience in research, analysis, geo-statistics and/or engineering field is required.
Proven and demonstrated experience in the production of Geographic Information System (GIS) products and Story Maps is required.
Experience in regional and national Geo-Statistical outputs is required.
Strong Geographic Information System (GIS) skills is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Additional Information

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
