Background: HarvestPlus Solutions

HarvestPlus Solutions (H+S) is a nonprofit entity established to address barriers to scaling and distribution of biofortified seed and food products to vulnerable populations as well as raise awareness on the benefits of biofortified food products via nutrition education. H+S builds upon the successful research conducted by HarvestPlus by translating research findings into widespread action and integrating nutritious seeds and foods into agri-food systems globally, ensuring vulnerable communities can improve their vitamin and mineral intake. Together, HarvestPlus and H+S ensure that biofortified crops are scaled to reach target communities while providing value for consumers and market actors.

Consultancy Details

H+S is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Global Business Advisor (GBA) to guide the execution of H+S Strategic Plans, working closely with HarvestPlus’ in-country, regional, and global teams across functions. The GBA will provide counsel on managing operations, resource mobilization, business models, compliances, business expansion, and strategic alliances, while also advising on the Profit and Loss (P&L) of the organization. A key goal for the GBA is to explore and realize the business potential of biofortified products, market development, and acquisition of rural and urban consumers through private sector commercialization models. The successful candidate will be a mission-focused, seasoned, and process-minded advisor with experience and a track-record in marketing agricultural and food products in social and commercial marketing settings.

Specific Deliverables

Global Operations

  • Develop and provide guidance in execution of strategies to optimize and streamline operations across the organization
  • Inspire and provide suggestions on operational efficiency, quality control, and process improvement
    • Facilitate collaboration between HarvestPlus/IPS Unit and H+S

Resource Mobilization

  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities, grants, and partnerships to support our mission
  • Provide guidance for effective management of financial resources and budget adherence

Business Models

  • Analyze and develop sustainable business models to enhance revenue generation
  • Monitor market trends to adapt business strategies accordingly
  • Work with the country team to develop context specific value propositions, e.g. product pricing models and placement to increase market share

Compliances

  • Understand all local and international regulations to ensure full compliance
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements

Business Expansion

  • Identify and evaluate new market opportunities and expansion prospects
  • Develop and execute market entry strategies

P&L

  • Assess the financial performance of the organization
  • Develop and advise on implementation of strategies to maximize profitability

Strategic Alliances

  • Build and nurture strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and industry players
  • Seize opportunities to collaborate with strategic partners on new funding opportunities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Business Administration, Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Work experience of 15+ years with a minimum of 10 years in the private sector
  • Proven experience in, and track record of global business management/management consulting
  • Demonstrated leadership and people skills, including excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills; the ability to effectively liaise with colleagues, partners, and donors in a diverse multi-cultural and fast-paced team environment
  • Experience in the conception, design, and management of strategies, intiatives, and programs
  • Exceptional drive and entrepreneurship, a pronounced ability to motivate others
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, and detail orientation
  • Strong financial acument and budget management skills, ability to conduct analysis of financial data and to forecast/assess the financial impact of proposed plans/projects
  • Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • A deep understanding of the agricultural and related industry is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Essential personal qualities of integrity, responsiveness, and decisiveness
