Key Responsibilities:
World Vision (WV) directly impacts more than 3 million people each year enabling access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). With more than 1,200 technical WASH staff members guiding our work in 42 countries supported by an annual investment of over $160 million, World Vision’s WASH programmes have grown strongly over the last decade and positioned WV as a leader in its global commitment to accelerate universal and equitable access to WASH services under the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). WV’s global WASH team is part of WVI’s Global Field Operations Group and one of the five priority sectors within the Global Programmes and Resources (GPR) Team.
The Global WASH Director provides leadership and direction for World Vision’s WASH programmes worldwide, ensuring technical excellence and leveraging internal and external stakeholders to grow the WASH portfolio through new business development including grants, contracts, and strategic partnerships. This role, and the team it leads, ensures that high technical standards are met in WV’s WASH programming, maximising our contribution to child well-being and reflecting WV’s distinctive of Christ-centred, child-focused and community empowering approach. This position builds WV’s reputation in the sector, enabling partnerships and innovative approaches, and strengthens WV’s community of practice, capacities and capabilities in WASH.
Main Responsibilities
Set Strategic Priorities
- Lead WV’s vision and global direction for WASH in alignment with the WV Partnership strategy.
- Lead the development and implementation of a multi-year WASH roadmap and business plan for the WV Partnership, in close collaboration with WVUS and other stakeholders.
- Responsible for the development, oversight and updating of WV Board, management and operational policies related to WASH.
- Ensure integration of WV’s Christian faith-based, child focused and community empowering approach throughout WV’s WASH strategy, programming and external engagement.
- Ensure the global WASH roadmap and business plan is vertically aligned (with fundraising & resource development) and horizontally integrated with other sectors, themes and lines of ministry.
Drive excellence in WASH programming
- Maintain a global overview of WASH across the WV Partnership with technical oversight and support to the WASH portfolio.
- Develop and oversee WV’s WASH programming standards, approaches and technical guidance including evidence-based core project models.
- Ensure monitoring and evaluation of the WASH programme’s impact and effectiveness in close collaboration with WV field, regional and support office colleagues and partners
- Enable and guide innovation, research and learning in WASH programming, policy and practice across the WV Partnership and with external partners and peer agencies.
Build technical capacities and capabilities for WASH
- Build capability of WV WASH professionals and oversee global WASH community of practice.
- Assess WASH technical capacity and capability needs for the WV Partnership, including benchmarking against peers and partners and building toward best in class.
- Promote a culture of quality, innovation and continuous improvement among WASH practitioners across the WV Partnership.
- Provide technical content and ‘faculty’ for WV WASH learning and development courses, curricula and events (with/through WV Technical Academy / Humanitarian & Development Capacities & Capabilities team and in partnership with external providers)
- Oversee roster of WASH consultants to supplement WV capacity if/when needed.
Thought leadership, external engagement and resource development
- Provide thought leadership on WASH, within and outside of World Vision, strengthening WV’s reputation and technical brand in WASH through quality programming, evidence of impact, policy and advocacy-related work.
- Manage key global relationships with WASH partners and stakeholders including UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), University of North Carolina Water Institute (UNC), Rural Water Supply Network
- Participate in high-level international meetings, forums, and conferences as required, positioning WV as an NGO of choice with potential and key partners, donors and stakeholders, including faith-based actors.
- Maintain a view of WASH revenue streams to support opportunities for resource development, working closely with other key stakeholders (e.g., Grants Acquisition & Management teams).
- Close liaison with WVUS and other WV Support Offices to equip them for philanthropic donor engagement and with the WV’s philanthropy alliance.
Team and organisational leadership
- Lead and manage a high performing, effective World Vision International (WVI) WASH team nurturing a healthy and Christ-centred team culture – overseeing individual and team recruitment, performance and professional development, directly of the WVI WASH team and indirectly through matrix management of extended WASH team with Regional WASH Directors and Disaster Management WASH advisor.
- Ensure collaboration and coordination with other WV ministry and program teams to enhance integrated impact and effectiveness across WV’s humanitarian and development programs and advocacy.
- Coordinate with other Global Sector leads to ensuring global approaches (including core project models) are integrated and have a ministry focus that is Christian, community-based, and child-focused.
- Coordinate closely with WVUS WASH team and with other WV Support Office partners and teams.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Master or PhD in WASH-related field (engineering in water, sanitation, or environment, or possibly Public Health)
- Minimum 10 years of experience in leading and managing WASH programmes and operations, preferably across several regional/country contexts.
- Strong technical track record – engineering in water, sanitation, or environmental; or possibly Public Health.
- Organisational, team and people leadership and management skills – able to lead and develop strategies, motivate and manage people and financial resources.
- Effective stakeholder relationship management in a complex, international and multi-cultural organisational setting
- Analytical skills – to track, understand and evaluate current research, advances, directions for the future of WASH programmes.
- Strong communication skills – effective written and spoken communicator including with external networks, events etc.
- Clear faith alignment with WV’s Christian foundational values and mission.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
- Experience with World Vision or similar peer NGO (preferably in Field Operations).
- Strong connection/experience with global WASH stakeholders (WHO, UNICEF, RWSN and others)
If this position is filled in the United States, the typical salary range for this role is $140,975 to $175,000 USD. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience and geographic location.
