This position is located in the Operational Training Section (OTS), Capacity Development and Operational Training Service (CDOTS), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Graphic Design Assistant reports to the Team Leader. The focus of this position is support to the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of operational support capacity building, training and knowledge management programmes.
The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to operational entities across the Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions and regional commissions.
The Capacity Development Operational Training Service (CDOTS) provides operational training, including training on enterprise resource management system and leads as the main facilitator of business process management activities in the UN Secretariat. The Operational Training Section (OTS) is responsible for supporting clients in the design, development and delivery of operational support capacity development programmes in the areas of human resources, finance, supply chain management, healthcare management, occupational health and safety and ICT, including training programs and knowledge management. The Section is also responsible for the design, development and delivery of senior leadership governance and resource stewardship programs and operational support to the delegation of authority framework.
Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Design Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
• Participates in meetings with clients to discuss potential design projects, e.g. substantive content, learning solutions, media (including electronically published products) and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
• Undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN-sponsored activities (e.g. training projects, major conferences, observances, events and campaigns, etc.); conceptualizes and develops design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or more abstract graphic solutions.
• Prepares all approved designs in electronic format for final review and publication; reviews graphics and design outcomes as required.
• Provides guidance and support throughout the project production process; coordinates and follows-up with clients and other relevant parties (e.g. authoring tool developers, proofreaders, subject matter experts etc.) and ensures that project in on schedule.
• Designs and create multimedia products including text, graphics, videos, photos, authoring tools, website content and infographics.
• Design and produce quality visual material using relevant computer software, e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Premiere and others, in appropriate format including but not limited to: video and graphic design work for authoring tools, web, social media and print products, infographics, GIFs, logos and branding, backdrops, flyers etc. including producing local language versions, ensuring photos and graphics are appropriate and conform to UN standards.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in publications production such as; desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, video production, video editing or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
Experience with animation design applications is required.
Experience with video editing applications is desirable.
Experience in graphic design and ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits, reference material, online material, training material, animation, video etc.) are required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is funded for a finite period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
