The work performed shall result in impactful visual communications materials which will be essential for enhancing the quality and reach of SMEP programme publications, related policy events, and associated distribution over social media.

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of planned activities under the FCDO-UNCTAD Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution Programme (SMEP), a series of studies, factsheets and visual communication materials are needed in order to assist dissemination of knowledge products. The activities will enhance the communications impact of policy linkages work related to plastic pollution, material substitutes, as well as with the new SMEP field projects on textiles, tanneries and food & beverages.

Under the supervision of the responsible THBD Project Officer from UNCTAD DITC/TED Branch, the consultant will:

1) Prepare two updates of the SMEP Implementation Strategy Diagram, taking into account feedback received from the FCDO (donor) and project partners.
a. The first update will be to restructure the detailed strategy diagram to better reflect contributions of activities under the logframe to wider impacts and the SDGs.
b. The second update will be a simplified strategic diagram clearly showing the main processes the SMEP programme is aiming to impact and the actions and activities being taken to achieve this.
2) Prepare up to 7 Policy briefs:
a. WTO Notifications on Material Substitutes;
b. Traceability and Standards for Policy Interventions;
c. Focus on Critical Material Substitutes;
d. Taking Note of Health Impacts of Plastics Manufacturing and Trade;
e. Lessons for Plastic Waste Mitigation Strategies(Based on Nepal Project);
f. Policy Lessons from Plastics recycling or mitigation projects;
g. Services and Plastic Pollution Mitigation.
3) Format 5 studies, as well as customized study covers, according to UNCTAD standards on:
a. Critical Sectors for Plastic Material Substitutes;
b. Health Impacts of Plastics Remanufacturing and Trade;
c. Business models mapping and policy Lessons from SMEP Projects;
d. Mapping of Services relevant to Mitigate Plastic Pollution.
e. Marine-based plastic substitutes
4) Prepare 5 banners for social media or physical events related to SMEP (Eg. INC 3 in Nairobi November 2023).
The designed materials should present results and findings in a reader friendly and clear manner
In addition, the designer should also:
• Incorporate any corrections to the typeset documents as instructed by the project team
• Use appropriate professional software, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, sending the final editable files to UNCTAD by electronic file transfer.
In completing the assignment, the designer is responsible for identifying relevant pictures and illustrations and securing and managing the associated copyrights.

Qualifications/special skills

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Visual arts, Architecture, Visual communication or Web design is required. A masters degree in a related area is an advantage.
At least 7 years of relevant work experience in design, branding, communication, visual arts projects is required.
Previous experience in designing environmentally-related publications and communications materials is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required.
