GGGI seeks to recruit a Green Investment Officer – Africa Regional Office who will work in collaboration with the Green Investment Services Lead to support investment activities in the Africa region. He/ she will report to the Green Investment Services Lead and will be part of the Africa regional’s team which is led by the Africa Regional Director.

To ensure top-tier level of delivery of the project, the regional Africa team seeks to hire an individual who is highly passionate and energetic about driving value chain innovation in poor rural communities working with public and private sector stakeholders. This position holder should be a dedicated team player with demonstrated professional integrity.

DESCRIPTION

The Green Investment Officer – Africa Regional Office supports Green Investment Services (GIS) and Country teams (including the Regional Lead and Head of the department) to develop the business case, investment documentation, identify and analyze project opportunities, competitive strengths and weaknesses of projects and their sponsors. This position reports to the Green Investment Services Lead in the Africa Regional Office.

PURPOSE
  • Independently develop own financial models and perform sound financial analysis.
  • Draw conclusions from financial analysis and use the financial projections (including valuation) to design/recommend suitable financial structures, identify project issues, opportunities and risk/reward factors.
  • Develop and maintain investment documentation under guidance from the deal team.
  • Support the head of department on business development by collecting and analyzing market data to support identification of new business opportunities.
  • Demonstrate sound analysis of financial models to assist screening of business opportunities.
  • Contribute to the implementation of climate finance projects currently being led by the Climate Finance and GCF Program manager.
ENGAGEMENT

The Officer applies knowledge of project/portfolio lifecycle to identify and meet critical path milestones, and to implement tasks (including production of documents) in a timely and high-quality fashion for the processing or supervision of projects.

Additionally, in coordination with the relevant GGGI Units, external experts and organizations, s/he will co-lead the research, analysis, and packaging of relevant local and global lessons and learning materials into knowledge products that are applicable to the context of the project. S/he will design and deliver innovative capacity development activities and utilize available technologies to influence the participation of target stakeholders while ensuring the achievement of learning outcomes.

He/she shall also build his/her own understanding of GGGI project development methodology as guided by the head of department, and in line with the project team.

DELIVERY
  • Identifying and conceptualizing potential green investment projects and create a project pipeline;
  • Developing financial models and performing sound financial analysis to assist screening of business opportunities;
  • Investigates and prepares overall project development, proposal drafting as well as GCF concept notes.
  • Supporting the implementation activities of signed MoUs (on project pipeline development, climate finance resources identification, etc)
  • Designing/recommending suitable financial structures, identifying project issues, opportunities and risk/reward factors; and
  • Developing and maintaining investment documentation where required.
  • Contribute to the implementation of other project outcomes where applicable.
  • Responsible for parts of the budget management and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Support Donor, Government, and GGGI reporting for the assigned output(s)/outcome(s)
  • Day-to-day management of one or more firms and international experts/consultants under supervision of the Project Lead.
  • Organizes analytical work to ensure that deliverables against milestones are provided in a timely manner.
  • Report and capture lessons learned.

Delivery includes aspects such as organizing of work outputs to ensure delivery through adapting GGGI procedures, anticipating resource needs and obstacles, and keeping the head of the department and others updated.

REQUIREMENT
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced university degree in areas such as international business or economics with further financial / economics training (master’s in finance or MBA or equivalent), urban/ civil engineering
  • Preferably 5-7 years of relevant experience in finance, investment banking, private equity, with sound understanding of climate finance. Experience in climate finance will be a plus.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of living and working outside of their country/countries of nationality (periods of study, volunteer work or internship positions would not be included)
  • Advanced financial modeling skills
  • Hands-on project management experience, an ability to efficiently manage many activities simultaneously and to navigate through complex environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Verbal and written fluency in English. French or Portuguese will be a plus.
FUNCTIONAL
  • Must possess the ability to develop and read financial models and balance sheets.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: renewable energy, cities and the financing of cities, design of financial instruments, infrastructure project development/assessment/finance, economic/financial analysis of infrastructure investment.
  • Experience with project finance, private or public sector projects, and/ or in PPP transactions is a bonus.
  • Experience with climate finance and investment banking is a huge plus.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills, with full knowledge of excel functions.

 WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is an X8, international grade level in GGGI’s salary scale. For X8 International grade, the base salary starts from USD 59,424. Determination of base salary is subject to candidate’s experience, academic background and internal equity. GGGI provides 15% of base salary towards retirement plan/long-term savings, 27 days of annual leave, and private health insurance that covers dental and vision.
