About the Program:

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the world’s leading authority and international standard setter on corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting. Over 92% of Fortune 500 companies that report emissions data to CDP use the GHG Protocol to do so. Building on a 20-year partnership between World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), GHG Protocol works with governments, industry associations, NGOs, businesses and other organizations. In 2016, 92% of Fortune 500 companies responding to the CDP used GHG Protocol to account for their emissions. The GHG Protocol also provides standards, tools and online training to help countries and cities track progress towards their climate goals.

Job Highlight:

The Scope 2 Research Associate III will support the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s Scope 2 Guidance revisions process as a member of the GHG Protocol secretariat. A primary focus of this position will involve helping organize and lead stakeholder engagement through the GHG Protocol’s technical working group process. This will include facilitating the evaluation of proposed changes and supporting the development of consensus-based revisions to the Scope 2 Guidance through a global multi-stakeholder process. You will report to WRI’s Climate Program Scope 2 Senior Manager.

What will you do:

Scope 2 Guidance updates and additional guidance (75% time):

  • Working with global stakeholders and the GHG Protocol team, identify and define the need, scope, and potential approaches to update the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance building on results from global scoping survey completed in March 2023
  • Facilitate GHG Protocol’s technical working group process, engaging a wide range of stakeholders from business, government, civil society, and academia as part of global multi-stakeholder process to develop consensus-based solutions
  • Draft updates or new guidance for key chapters within the Scope 2 Guidance, working with stakeholders and the GHG Protocol
  • Communicate with global stakeholders on scope 2 related topics to support transparency, identify priority topics and proposed solutions for consideration within future updates or new guidance for Scope 2
  • Prepare and lead presentations, issue briefs, proposals, or other materials as needed as part of the guidance development process.

Promote effective adoption and use of the GHG Protocol by businesses, standard setters, and other organizations (10% time):

  • Research and track major regulatory and voluntary sustainability, climate disclosure, target setting, etc. standards (e.g., EU CSRD, ISSB, US SEC, SBTi, net zero programs, etc.)
  • Collaborate with regulatory and voluntary sustainability and climate disclosure standard setters, reporting companies, and investors to help inform harmonization, alignment, and interoperability as appropriate between the GHG Protocol and accounting rules and programs under development.

Project Operations (15% time):

  • Respond to inquiries regarding interpretation and application of current GHG Protocol. Support the Scope 2 Senior Manager with other duties as assigned, perform special short- and long-range assignments/projects as directed.

What will you need:

  • Education: You have a completed master’s degree in energy, environmental science and/or policy, or a related field.
  • Experience: You have 8+ years full-time relevant work experience in GHG accounting, the energy industry, environmental and/or energy policy, stakeholder management, climate change mitigation, and/or related fields.
  • You have familiarity and knowledge of the GHG Protocol and corporate GHG inventories, Scope 2; life cycle assessment (LCA); sustainability disclosures, ESG, and financial accounting and reporting, and/or related subjects.
  • You have experience in project management and in complex, multi-stakeholder processes with a proven ability to build partnerships and consensus across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • You have experience with independently managing competing and dynamic priorities under tight deadlines.

Potential Salary:

116,000 USD to 139,000 USD. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors. WRI offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
