World Resources Institute (WRI) India, an independent charity legally registered as the India Resources Trust, provides objective information and practical proposals to foster environmentally sound and socially equitable development. WRI India’s mission is to move human society to live in ways that protect Earth’s environment and its capacity to provide for the needs and aspirations of current and future generations. Through research, analysis, and recommendations, WRI India puts ideas into action to build transformative solutions to protect the earth, promote livelihoods, and enhance human well-being. We are inspired by and associated with WRI, a research organization. Currently over 300 researchers are working with WRI India in our offices at Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

About your Role:

WRI India’s Energy Program has a four-pronged strategy to support India’s transition to clean energy – Clean Energy Supply, Decarbonized Energy Consumption, Energy for Equitable Development and Energy, Minerals & Circularity. Cross cutting through these pillars is the need for finance – international and domestic; public and private; commercial and philanthropic – to pay for the transition. To achieve the scale of India’s ambitious climate targets and developmental priorities, the amount of financing for clean energy needs to increase dramatically. Doing so is particularly challenging now that the real cost of capital has increased over the past several years for countries like India, and the flow of finance does not reach all who need it. As the Energy Transition Finance Lead for WRI India’s Energy Program, you will explore what financing models are working and these can be improved to accelerate adoption. You will lead research on the optimal arrangement between private sector finance and public finance – and design positive loops so one spurs growth in the other and cumulatively help achieve India’s energy and development goals.
How your day will unfold:
WRI India is looking for a candidate to:
  • Lead, conduct, guide and develop research on energy transition finance in relation to (a) national / state or sectoral energy transition plans; (b) development of clean energy technologies and improving access to existing technologies; (c) existing financing and finance instruments, understanding gaps and identifying solutions to improve flow of financing; and identify new clean energy finance models and structures; (d) policy and regulation, and identifying incentives that ensure alignment of incentives with the achievement of energy transition and developmental outcomes; (e) improving data frameworks on investments and performance of various financial instruments ; and (f) the social impacts of the energy transition including issues around jobs, tax revenues, environmental and social impacts, etc.
  • Identify and engage with key stakeholders in private and public financial institutions (national and international) across the range of financial institutions including commercial finance and developmental finance and other institutions that fund clean energy and developmental projects. Also support the team in their interactions with utilities, regulatory commissions, national and state agencies and ministries, academia, peer research organizations and broader civil society to share research and views on energy transition finance.
  • Keep abreast of energy transition finance issues, tax and fiscal issues, regulatory and policy trends, industry and finance landscape and sectoral developments.
  • Participation in stakeholder dialogues, liaise with research partners, policymakers, business and other actors active in India’s energy transition, and represent WRI India on energy transition finance issues.
  • Identify the development of new research areas, with actionable project plans and raise resources for impactful projects on India’s energy transition finance.
  • Assist with project-relevant articles and other communication documents.
  • Ensuring timely submission of deliverables and regular updates to donors and partners.
  • Support coordination and dissemination of training and capacity building activities.
  • Assist in the organizing of internal and external meetings, workshops, conferences, and other dissemination activities
