The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Mopti, Mali.
As a multi-sectoral emergency Head of Project, you will manage the implementation of a humanitarian assistance project. The project is part of a three country program (Mali, Niger, and Burkina) and you will be responsible for the specific component of Mali, which will cover the central region (Mopti, Segou) and two northern regions (Timbuktu and Gao).
The project has multiple components such as: food assistance (cash transfers, emergency agricultural production), prevention of malnutrition, WASH, and the development of an early warning and disaster preparedness approach.
You will also contribute to the development of new projects and the operational strengthening of the Nexus approach, by linking humanitarian responses and development activities in the project areas.
Your responsibilities
- Support the development of planning and results-based management tools and produce a consolidated annual work plan for the multi-sector emergency project (Mali component)
- Supervise the field teams and ensure quality implementation of the entire project in accordance with the work plans and budget
- Logistics management of the projects, ensuring that the procurement requests are done in a timely and effective manner in coordination with the operations department
- Ensure the quality of project interventions by monitoring partnership agreements, training, post-distribution evaluations etc. to ensure alignment with the project’s logical frameworks and Welthungerhilfe’s strategy in Mali on emergencies
- In collaboration with the Area Manager in Mopti, provide operational support and oversight of workflow and procedures
- Ensure the monitoring of project activities in close collaboration with the MEAL focal points based in the field and the MEAL Expert of the Programme Coordination Unit; this includes setting up a monitoring system and participating in monitoring activities, with a particular focus on cross-cutting themes such as gender, protection mainstreaming and conflict sensitivity approaches
- Ensure that activity reports and evaluation actions (Baseline, PDM, Endline, other evaluations) comply with Welthungerhilfe standards
- Ensure that humanitarian response activities are implemented in full synergy with development projects (Nexus)
- Ensure the inclusion of protection and gender aspects in project implementation
- In collaboration with the Emergency Programs Coordinator, ensure the progress of project implementation, quality (reporting, visibility) and monitoring of humanitarian needs in the areas of action
Your profile
- A university or college degree in Food Security and Livelihoods, Rural Development, Agronomy, Agroeconomics, Animal Production, Agroforestry, Environment or any other equivalent degree related to food security and livelihoods activities
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in emergency operational management positions, particularly in INGOs and/or UN agencies focusing on food security and nutrition projects
- Proven experience in managing emergency projects in volatile contexts
- Proven experience in conducting and coordinating emergency and large-scale food assistance activities
- Previous work experience in other countries in the Sahel region is an asset
- Ability to produce high quality work in a fragile and unstable context
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and manage complex and diverse relationships with stakeholders
- Proven ability to work in a team in a multicultural environment and to maintain smooth and effective working relationships both inside and outside the organization on a regular basis
- Excellent problem solving and strategic thinking skills
- Solid computer skills in Microsoft tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Readiness to receive necessary vaccinations for working in Welthungerhilfe’s programme countries
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in French; knowledge of professional English is an asset
