International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to evaluate the environmental, socio-economic, and health impacts of biodigester adoption compared to non-adopters and to identify best manure based biodigester management practices.
ILRI works to improve food security and nutrition and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 11 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, ILRI has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
Background
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) technology offers a sustainable solution for waste management, energy production, and environmental sustainability, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. AD processes organic materials like livestock manure, food waste, and human excreta into biogas and nutrient-rich bioslurry. Biogas, composed primarily of methane and carbon dioxide, can be used for cooking, heating, and power generation, while the bioslurry serves as a biofertilizer, improving soil health. The adoption of AD reduces deforestation, indoor air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and health risks associated with poor sanitation. Additionally, AD addresses climate change by capturing methane emissions and contributes to the Global Methane Pledge.
This project focuses on assessing the effectiveness and benefits of manure fed biodigesters in Kenya, building on ongoing research in Ethiopia. It aims to evaluate the environmental, socio-economic, and health impacts of biodigester adoption compared to non-adopters, as well as identify best management practices.
