Position Summary

The Native Nations team spans multiple areas within WWF in which Tribal Nations have an interest, including land conservation, wildlife conservation, the Arctic, aquaculture, subsistence, Food Sovereignty, buffalo, and grasslands conservation. This internship will focus disproportionately on the Tribal Buffalo portfolio and support the work of the WWF Tribal and Buffalo Teams. The intern will report directly to the Vice President of Native Nations, Conservation and Food Systems. The position will assist the Native Nations Team with a variety of tasks ranging from policy research to engagement with US based Native American Tribes and Tribal communities. The primary subject matter focus in on Great Plains Tribal buffalo herds and conservation of American grasslands and food sovereignty.

Responsibilities will include

• Assist in creating a database of Tribal buffalo herds, their needs, and our ongoing projects,
• Assist in compiling a list of achievements from WWF and our partners in supporting Tribal buffalo,
• Assisting in outreach events and communications to support Tribal buffalo herds.

Minimum Requirements:

• Pursuing either an Associate’s or Bachelor’s or Graduate Degree program or a recent graduate. Tribal College and University students and their recent graduates in particular are encouraged to apply.
• Excellent research skills
• Familiarity with the history and role of buffalo in the Great Plains and with Great Plains Tribal Nations
• Organized and self-motivated
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Preference for citizens of Native American Tribal Nations.
• Preference for residents of a Native American Indian Reservation where the Tribe maintains a buffalo herd, located within South Dakota or Montana.
• Preference for candidate with hands on experience with buffalo herds, including proficiency in field processing of a buffalo.
• Preference for candidate with proficiency in a Great Plains Native American Tribal language, culture, and cultural significance of buffalo.

Learning Outcomes:

A stronger understanding of the intersection between conservation organizations, land management, Tribal nations, and buffalo and grasslands. Increased skill set understanding the complexities of national policies and federal and inter-Tribal outreach.

Location:

US Remote – WWF employs interns in all states with the exception of: Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Wyoming. Preference for residents of a Native American Indian Reservation where the Tribe maintains a buffalo herd, located within South Dakota or Montana.

Compensation:

Paid – $20.50 per hour for current undergraduate students and $22.50 for current graduate students. Estimated 10 hours a week.
