Background

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The project aims to understand the role of digital technologies in facilitating better farmer outcomes and more and better jobs in the agricultural sector in Kenya. As part of the study, IFPRI is working in close collaboration with local partners to analyze secondary data using econometric and Big Data techniques while also carrying out primary data collection in several counties. The analysis of secondary and primary data aims to inform policymakers and researchers within and outside Kenya.

To ensure high standards of data analysis, the project is hiring a consultant with extensive experience in Big Data analysis, econometric analysis, data collection, quality assurance, data cleaning, and stakeholder engagement in Kenya. The consultant will work with local partners to carry out the data analysis and collection and will contribute to scientific output for the project. The consultant should have experience working with R and analyzing large datasets.

Scope of Work

The consultant will work closely with local partners to generate scripts, conduct data analysis, and carry out data collection.

The key responsibilities include:

· Establish R scripts to link geospatial datasets to other secondary datasets;

· Create descriptive statistics in the form of maps and tables using GIS and other secondary datasets;

· Develop and implement econometric models in R to analyze secondary datasets;

· Write scientific communication (e.g., blogs and working papers) related to secondary data analysis;

· Provide input into survey design for primary data collection;

·Test and refine surveys to ensure high quality and relevant data is collected;

· Work with local partners to hold meetings/workshops to disseminate the findings of the analytical work.

Time required

The time required for this contract will be 50 working days beginning March 2025 – June 2025.

Timeline and Deliverables:

Deliverable #1: [March 2025 – 10 days]

Successfully download and merge various geospatial datasets into key secondary datasets

Write a basic report on descriptive statistics in the form of maps and tables on the secondary and GIS data

Deliverable #2: [April 2025 – 10 days]

Develop an outline of a working paper on geospatial determinants of agricultural activities

Propose econometric models to be used in the scientific paper

Provide inputs into the primary data collection survey design

Deliverable #3: [April 2025 – May 2024 10 days]

Conduct econometric analysis

Basic report of key econometric outcomes

Basic report on county-level case studies using the secondary and GIS data

Deliverable #4: [June 2025 – July 2025 20 days]

Draft scientific working paper
