Result of Service

Under the supervision of the Regional Coordinator for Environmental Crime Programme, the incumbent will be responsible for providing editorial services for the English version of the national and regional documents and guidelines, including technical publications on crimes that affect the environment, such as waste trafficking and wildlife and forest crime. The consultant will be responsible for content/copy editing approximately a total of 200 pages of several publications and support the drafting of 10 web stories to be published by UNODC Environment Team in Southeast Asia during 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities

UNODC Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment assists Member States to prevent and respond to crimes that affect the environment such as wildlife and forest crime, crimes in the fisheries sector, illegal mining, and trafficking in precious metals and waste.

UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) focuses on crime and drug challenges that are best addressed through a coordinated approach at the regional level. The Regional Programme is focused on six areas of work: Addressing the Drug Problem; Countering Transnational Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking; Anti-Corruption; Terrorism Prevention; Criminal Justice; and Crisis Responses.

Under the Global and Regional Programmes, one of the areas of UNODC’s technical assistance to the member states include providing up-to-date information, and most recent evidence-informed scientific recommendations to handle specific issues under the UNODC mandates. To fulfil this, UNODC produces a wide variety of quality, high-impact advocacy materials, reports, publications, and studies capturing the main areas under the programme, to inform policy makers and programme managers from countries in the region.
In view of ensuring quality of materials used for awareness raising, advocacy and public dissemination, UNODC seeks to hire one English Editor Contractor to provide timely and quality editing of UNODC documents and publications, covering crimes that affect the environment, including waste trafficking and wildlife and forest crime.

Qualifications/special skills

– High school diploma or equivalent is required.
– A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in writing, editing, proofreading, and publishing is required.
– Experience with writing for the UN or other international organizations, preferably on topics related to UNDOC’s mandates, is desirable.
– Experience or familiarity with legal and technical terms related to criminal justice and crimes that affect the environment is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
