Nature of Position:

Malta is of strategic importance, located in the centre of the migration route from Africa to Europe. Despite increased numbers of movements along the Central Mediterranean route, Malta has received less and less sea arrivals since 2019. Some 444 people were rescued at sea and disembarked in Malta in 2022, compared with 3,406 in 2019. Migration and asylum remain central political themes and receive frequent media attention. UNHCR Malta focuses its engagement with Maltese authorities on search and rescue, asylum procedures, reception and detention conditions, child protection and durable solutions. As a result, the UNHCR Country Office in Malta works closely with the International Protection Agency, the Detention Services Agency, and the Agency for Welfare of Asylum Seekers. UNHCR receives regular and ad hoc data from various Government Agencies, International Organisations and NGOs on the number and situation of asylum seekers and refugees. UNHCR collects, analyses and presents the data and information in a timely manner in order to better manage resources, respond more effectively and inform its advocacy efforts for enhancing the well-being of its persons of concern, among others, in line with the UNHCR Data Transformation Strategy 2020-2025. The G6 Information Management Associate is a member of the protection team and will be supervised by the Associate Legal Officer.

In addition to the standard duties, the incumbent will support the operation with:

  • Liaising with the competent Government Agencies, International Organisations, partners, and NGOs on data requirements
  • Implementing the Office’s Information Management Standard Operating Procedures and revising as necessary
  • Delivering trainings on data management and data protection where needed
  • Drafting information management products and data presentation

Living and Working Conditions:

A small archipelago in the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta has become a major destination for tourists and also for industries such as iGaming and online betting since joining the EU in 2004. Around 98% of the population is Roman Catholic and religion still plays an important role in Maltese daily life. Historically, Malta used to be cheaper than many other EU countries, however this situation has rapidly changed over the past few years as the costs of housing and living have risen. Living standards in Malta are good and compare well with those of European countries.

Specific considerations:

  • Real Estate: The rental market has seen an increase in both supply and demand in recent years and is expected to continue to grow. The type of property and its location, standard of furnishings and finishing, and duration of tenancy all affect the price of your rental property. Most often, properties are rented fully furnished, including appliances while utility expenses, such as electricity and internet, for long term tenancies are paid for separately by the lessee on a consumption basis.
  • Security: Malta is a H Duty Station with a 5-year SAL. Malta is a safe country; however travellers are urged to practice common-sense personal security precautions that are part of everyday life, particularly when spending time in areas frequented by tourists. Visitors should always lock their car when parking and should not leave luggage and valuables visible inside parked vehicles.
  • Transport: Malta drives on the left-hand side of the road; therefore, vehicles are right-hand drives. Taxi services from Malta International Airport to all locations in Malta are based on a fixed tariff and taxi apps such as Bolt, Uber or eCabs, are highly recommended. Local buses: a one-way ticket costs up to €2 for non-residents and it is valid for unlimited rides for two hours. Recently, Malta has introduced free bus travel for all residents with a local ID card.
  • Education: Primary and secondary State schools are found in all the main regions of Malta. Demand for faith-based and private schools is high. Entry into faith-based schools is by ballot, and requires early booking, sometimes a few months or years in advance.
  • Healthcare: The country has a wide selection of private clinics and a good public healthcare system which is free for its residents who pay national insurance.
