Project context

 

The alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT will work together with national research partners, stakeholders from the private sector and banana growing communities from Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador with the overall goal to reduce the impact and risks for food security and livelihoods of small-scale farmers in banana-based agricultural systems by preventing the further spread of Tropical Race 4 (TR4) and by generating scientific knowledge for improved grower management of Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB).

The Socioeconomic, environmental, and food security analysis of Foc TR4 on value chain actors focuses on understanding the impacts of Foc TR4 on different value chain actors’ socioeconomics, food security, and environment is critical to quantify how this devastating disease affects these actors and their environments. Information from this analysis will provide actionable data on the importance of placating the effects of Foc TR4, helping policymakers, scientists, development organizations, and others develop and target policies and initiatives. The analysis will utilize both quantitative and qualitative methods. Qualitative methods will include semi-structured in-depth interviews with value chain actors and focus group discussions.

 

Specific objectives of the consultancy

  • To characterize the banana sector in Colombia
  • To conduct analysis examining “Socioeconomic, environmental, and food security analysis of Foc TR4 on value chain actors–“
  • Documenting evidence via a high-level policy report

 

 

Requirements


Specific requirements

  • PhD degree in Agricultural Economics with more than 7 years of professional experience in international agricultural research.
  • Experience working on Banana FoC TR4 disease
  • Quantitative data analysis skills
  • High level reporting working skill in English language
  • Demonstrate ability to write via journal publications
  • Ability to work independently and in project teams

Timeframe

Duration: April 20th to July 20

Budget- Payments

 

Payments for this consultancy will be made in strict compliance with the ToRs, with prior approval from Alliance Bioversity International and CIAT. Payments will be made by products and subject to the presentation and approval of progress reports according to the schedule to follow:

  • First payment: 50% of the total value of the consultancy after No. 1 and No. 2 products have been delivered and approved.
  • Second payment: 50% of the total value of the consultancy after No. 3 product has been delivered and approved.

This is an international search and will be managed through a consultant agreement.
