Program Overview
From distant rainforests to neighbourhood street trees, forests provide tremendous benefits to urban areas such as clean air and water, climate resilience and biodiversity, human health, and well-being. Forests also provide jobs, recreation, and a suite of nature-based solutions for city infrastructure.
Cities4Forests helps cities from around the world connect with and invest in inner forests (such as city trees and urban parks), nearby forests (such as green corridors and watersheds) and faraway forests (such as tropical and boreal forests). We encourage our cities to better conserve, manage, and restore these forests. And we provide technical assistance to align local policy, shared knowledge, peer-to-peer learning, and communication activities to help cities take climate action together.
Currently, WRI Indonesia and Cities4Forests are involved in the study of flood analysis. Our objective is to integrate nature-based solutions as an alternative way to help the cities mitigate their flood risks. Together with the physical flood control infrastructures, the nature-based solutions will help to reduce the capacity gap between the potential amount of water entering cities’ area and the total capacity of flood control infrastructures. Therefore, it is important to have a study on how nature-based solutions can effectively help to reduce those gaps.
