Purpose of Job
The intern(s) will be based in the Cairo Resident Office, and are expected to support several teams across the Bank, including Country Economics, Strategy and Policy (CESP); Governance; Capital and Financial Markets Development (CFMD); Gender and Economic Inclusion (GEI) and Banking, to support economic and project analysis.
The intern provides support to the regional and country experts and bankers working on macroeconomic and structural reform analysis, policy advice and investment for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse macroeconomic performance and risks, and assess structural reform progress in the countries of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region in order to provide input into key Bank products;
- Maintain databases on the region and monitor local media and commercial sources about economic and policy developments in the region so as to provide up-to-date briefings to management;
- Draft contributions for the department’s regular publications, including the Regional Economic Prospects and the annual Transition Report, the flagship annual publication of EBRD;
- Show strong initiative in performing ad hoc assignments, including background research on macroeconomic, sectoral and other policy developments, drafting of briefings, presentations, and short analyses/focus pieces;
- Conduct theoretical and/or empirical research on economic issues of interest to the Bank.
- Under the guidance of more senior bankers and experts, work as a project team member on transactions, contributing to all aspects of project structuring and execution, including comprehensive research and analysis of background materials, market information and financial performance data; analyse and evaluate potential risks related to the proposed project, including analysis of financial statements, preparing and updating financial models and financial projections;
- Ensure that all tasks assigned are completed within the specified periods to a high quality and in line with the policies, procedures and objectives of the Bank.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics or a related field
- Experience and familiarity with the region, including work and/or study experience
- Experience working with economic datasets and knowledge of statistical and econometric software packages
- Strong analytical, numerical and quantitative skills in economic programming and policies
- Computer literacy, conversant with Microsoft Office and spreadsheet packages including financial analysis and modelling modules.
- Research and/or work experience in an area of interest to the Bank, including political economy, economics of development, financial economics, international economics, governance, inclusion and macroeconomics
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in teams
- Ability to operate sensitively and effectively in a multicultural environment
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Proficiency in Arabic and French is preferred.
