Position Overview
Girl Up is a global leadership development initiative, positioning girls to be leaders in the movement for gender equality. With resources in six languages and 5,600 Girl Up Clubs in more than 130 countries, we’ve trained 125,000 girls of all backgrounds to create tangible change for girls everywhere.

Girl Up provides leadership training and gives girls tools to become gender equality advocates and activists. Through our programs, girls broaden their social impact skill set, bene t from a platform to tell their stories, and apply STEM for social good. Our girl leaders create real policy change at local and national levels, help raise millions of dollars to support United Nations programs that reach tens of thousands of girls around the world, and build community-based movements. Girl Up was founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010, and continues to work across a global community of partners to achieve gender equality worldwide.

The communications intern will primarily support Girl Up’s communication and storytelling strategies, across all platforms and at key events.

Essential Functions

  • Support key campaign moments such as Girl Up’s Global Leadership Summit.
  • Assist in generating ideas and content for campaign materials such as toolkits, blogs, emails, and newsletters.
  • Assist with planning, creating, and editing social media content and blogs.
  • Assist with metrics and reporting for partner deliverables
  • Other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university.
  • Interest and/or experience in digital communications, professional or campus organizing, grassroots outreach, political campaigns, and/or canvassing is highly preferred.
  • Interest in women and girls’ rights, global health issues, international development, and/or journalism and communications is preferred.
  • Broad understanding of digital tools and social media, with examples of current and successful uses of blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office suite, with particular emphasis on database management.
  • Ability to take initiative as a self-starter.
  • Strong creativity and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with a small, fast-paced team and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong consideration given to candidates with experience with HTML, video editing, and Adobe Creative Suite software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
  • Must be available to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
