Position Overview
Girl Up is a girl-centered leadership development initiative, focusing on equity for girls and women in spaces where they are unheard or underrepresented. We believe when girls and women are in positions of influence, they work to create a more just and equitable world for everyone.
Girl Up operates a global network of regional affiliates reaching 200,000 girls in 152 countries. We deliver evidence-based leadership development training through our girl-led Clubs, programs, and events. As members of a global movement, girls are a force for social good — connected to a community of their peers who are advocating for policy change and advancing gender justice.

Girl Up was founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010. The United Nations Foundation is an independent charitable organization created to be a strategic partner for the United Nations to address humanity’s greatest challenges, build initiatives across sectors to solve problems at scale, and drive global progress.
Girl Up is seeking an intern to learn about and support its programs and community engagement. The Intern, Community Engagement will support a range of tasks for Girl Up’s Teen Advisory Board, Alumni Network, Club Program, online community platform, and overall global community engagement. They will report to the Manager, Community Engagement, Girl Up and work collaboratively with other members of the Girl Up Program team.
Club Program and Online Community Support
- Collaborate to coordinate content curation for news, features, resources, and other content in the online Community.
- Support the development and design of new or enhanced Club resources.
- Support the maintenance and enhancement of current Club and Community resources.
- Support Club onboarding communications, reporting updates, club audit and strategic planning.
- Support developing Community audit and identified growth opportunities around platform design and user experience,
Programmatic Support
- Support girl-led “Unite” Coalition Summits; help to monitor the Girl Up online platform and Clubs email listserv
- Support inputs for the Girl Up Monthly Newsletter and Club Leaderbook; help to review and respond to Coalition and Regional Leader Reports;
- Collaborate with program team staff to plan Teen Advisory Board, Coalition and Regional Leader virtual and in-person events.
- Support Program team staff with the development and operations of the global Clubs and Coalition and Regional Leaders programs.
Additional Support
- Support the set-up, planning, and execution of registration links, designing promotional graphics, prepping speakers, etc. for youth programs both virtual and in-person.
- Design and co-create drafts for external youth engagement communications.
- Participate in internal working groups, committees, and meetings taking minutes and contributing as needed;
- Support the maintenance of admin systems for registrations, rosters, and connections for youth leaders.
- Provide support with additional special projects and tasks as needed.
Selection Criteria:
- Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within 8 months of graduation) of a college or university.
- Commitment to Girl Up’s mission and core values.
- Commitment to social justice, diversity and inclusion.
- Excellent customer service skills with a passion for member engagement.
- Experience in Excel, Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Canva and Outlook.
- Responsible, flexible, and hard-working.
- An interest in youth leadership, global development and the work of the UN Foundation, gender equality a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills to engage a wide range of individuals including youth participants.
- Strong skills working in teams and across many types of organizational structure – collaborator; problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong inter-personal skills.;
- This is a remote position.
- Ability to work 20-29 hours per week.
- Ability to meet regular attendance / tardiness policy.
- Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
