Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Regional Office for West and Central Africa, seeks to recruit one (1) intern for six (6) months starting in May 2023.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the UNODC TIP/ SOM Unit coordinator and direct supervision of National Project Officer based in Niamey. She or he will work closely with the team member in charge of communication, visibility and monitoring and evaluation of the unit’s projects.

The Trafficking in Persons/Smuggling of Migrants Unit is offering one (1) internship position which will focus on the specific tasks below:

Under the supervision of the National Project Coordinator, the candidate will have the following tasks and responsibilities:

• Prepare country analysis on national legal frameworks and law enforcement efforts related to Trafficking in Persons/Smuggling of Migrants in the beneficiary countries, in support of programmatic drafting;
• Prepare key internal and external information material, including brochures, web stories, press releases, briefing points and official discourses;
• Draft articles on unit’s activities in Niger together with original stories related to trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants (feature stories, photo stories and Press notes);
• Prepare data collection, evaluation and monitoring of technical assistance scheme delivered under the Trafficking in Persons/Smuggling of Migrants Unit in beneficiary countries;
• Provide substantive, administrative and logistical support to the delivery of technical assistance activities (drafting workshops, training courses, sensitization events) delivered to targeted audience.

General duties include, but are not limited to:
• Assist with the creation, collection and formatting of training and conference presentation materials;
• Assist with drafting of official communications, press releases, speeches and articles;
• Support the unit in helping maintain and update the project internet and social media web pages;
• Assist with the production, design and dissemination of public information material through website, brochures, posters, letters, e-mails, and broadcasts in various languages as required reaching a wide public audience;
• Contribute to the drafting and translation of relevant documents such as newsletters, progress reports, training reports, etc;
• Assist with the implementation of official travel missions and associated project activities throughout the region; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies

The United Nations Core Competencies include:
• Communication: proven ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely, and conveying maximum necessary information, making and defending recommendations.
• Excellent command of photography, writing for the web, filming or editing. Experience in webdesign and creation of communication supports, use of design and creation software such as Adobe Illustrator
Teamwork: proven interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Planning and organizing: ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans, prioritize competing demands and work to tight deadlines.

Education

To qualify for this internship, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
• Be computer literate in standard software applications and design and creation software
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Familiarity with the topic of combating the smuggling of migrants / migration or trafficking in persons is an asset.
• Familiarity with project elaboration, implementation and monitoring and exposure to international development cooperation is desirable.
• Required are studies in journalism, communication, media with a strong interest for social science, international relations, political science, law, public administration or related fields.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written French and English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
