The internship position is located in the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA), Division for Operations (DO) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the UNODC Regional Representative for Eastern Africa (ROEA) and report directly to the Associate Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer (Transnational Organized Crime, Illicit Trafficking and Terrorism Programmes) based in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

The internship is unpaid and full time (i.e. five days (40 hours) per week), for a duration of three (3) months (with the possibility of an extension up to a maximum of 6 months subject to the needs of the office and availability of the intern) with a desired starting date in October 2023.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist the TOC Programme Management Officer heading the Programme and support the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer in Madagascar in all programme activities related to countering transnational organized crime and terrorism in Madagascar. Within assigned authority, the intern shall undertake the following duties which may include but are not limited to:
• Conduct research on topics of relevance to UNODC Madagascar Programme (e.g. Various forms of TIP prevailing in Madagascar);
• Support the programme team with the drafting and editing of reports, concept note, presentations, background documents, official communications, press releases, talking points, speeches and articles;
• Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences;
• Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) (preferably in the area of Global Governance, Political and Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Public Administration, Economics, Law, International Affairs or other related field). • Be computer literate in standard software applications;

• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in French language and knowledge of the English language are required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
