Program Overview for Energy

The objective of the India energy program is to inform and guide India’s transition to cleaner energy. The program focuses on different inter-related aspects of this energy transition: enhancing energy access, clean energy interventions among specific consumer categories, energy transitions across different stages and the social, environmental and economic implications of RE. Through strong research, ground-level implementation experience, partnerships with key stakeholders and communicating our work, we seek to achieve impact at scale.

About your Role and how your day will unfold:

Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) provide the last mile connectivity in the Power sector value chain. Any efforts to move towards clean energy ultimately needs to percolate to the electricity distribution and consumption levels. The Energy Team at WRI analyses ways and measures by which India’s electricity distribution sector can play a pivotal role in clean energy transition. This will involve various policy, regulatory level changes and reforms, backed with ground research and analysis.

Your role would be to conduct secondary research, data collation and analysis on an indicative list of topics mentioned below –

Power procurement related –

  • Source wise, plant/ company wise, station wise, compilation of power procurement of Discoms, State wise, for all DISCOMs in India (3-5 years data)
  • Mapping of information on RE generation and installed capacity.
  • Mapping of Thermal Power plants – plant wise, station wise – MW capacity, load factor, annual generation ((3- 5 years data, some data points could be available month wise)

Power consumption related –

  • Consumer category wise compilation of energy sales data for all DISCOMs

Discom revenues –

  • ARR compilation under different Components/Parameters – Discom wise, State wise
  • Compilation of consumer category wise Tariff rates across different states (latest tariff schedules). Complete list of charges applicable on consumers.

Regulations, Regulatory Orders, Guidelines, Rules, etc.-

  • Tracking down new policy and regulatory measures that promote and specify clean energy transition and its impact on Distribution companies.

Submit the complete set of data and analysis to your supervisor, upon completion of internship.

You will be guided by the members of the Energy Program.

Qualifications:

Essential –

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/economics/energy, and/or Master’s degree in Energy/Environmental Economics/public policy/ regulatory with specialization/ focus in energy. (It is expected that a candidate with given educational background will have basic awareness of power sector, generation, transmission and distribution operations, electricity consumers etc.).
  • Proficiency in using MS-office applications like, MS-Excel for modelling and analysis, MS-PowerPoint for developing presentations, etc.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others; to demonstrate flexibility in fulfilling assignments.
  • Foreign nationals applying must have valid permits for work in India.

Desirable –

  • Ability to navigate through Regulatory orders, regulations, and handle basic regulatory data.
  • Proficiency in analysing data through advanced software programs like Python, R, Stata would be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of global energy space development, climate policy issues is an advantage.

Stipend: ₹ 25,000 per month.

Location: Delhi, India.
