Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region’s economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Division for Gender Affairs, Santiago, Chile will last 3 to 6 (2 min/6 max) months, depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an “as-needed” basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of the ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER: Karen García The intern will report to the Statistician of the Division for Gender Affairs – ECLAC The intern will contribute as research assistant to construct inputs for knowledge documents and presentations. Some specific tasks include data processing, development of summaries and concept notes. Specific tasks the intern will fulfil: • Process microdata from household surveys from Latin American and Caribbean countries, preferably in stata. • Prepare graphs and tables for data analysis on gender inequalities in the labour market, poverty, use of time, social security. • Reviewing documents • Do literature reviews. • Attending and taking notes in meetings and events • Preparing draft presentations

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in economics or related field (e.g., Public Policy, Statistics, Social Policy); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field (e.g., Public Policy, Statistics, Social Policy). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants must have good knowledge of STATA and in processing microdata from household surveys, especially those related to labor market, income and time use.

Languages

Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of English is required.
