Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will be placed in the Geospatial Analysis and Programme Delivery Section (GPS) at UNODC Headquarters, Vienna, Austria. GPS is part of the Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division of Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA). GPS serves as a host for the Illicit Crop Monitoring Programme and various other projects that utilize geospatial data and tools for researching topics related to drugs and crime. GPS supports geospatial operations within field offices, such as conducting surveys on illicit crops and illegal mineral mines, including the management of remote sensing data. Additionally, GPS contributes to cartographic support for RAB and the Global Research Network by generating and validating maps tailored for diverse publications like the World Drug Report, Global Study on Homicide, Crimes against the Environment, and more. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Assist in the collection, management, analysis and quality control of geospatial and remote sensing data related to drug and crime research. • Assist in the presentation of geographic information in static and dynamic (web) maps, applying new techniques and innovative designs. • Assist in the publication and presentation of research that used geospatial information in reports, graphs, tables and presentations. • Assist in documenting protocols for the validation of maps on their cartographic representation and compliance with UN standards. • Contribute to liaisons with Universities, research centers, UN networks for cooperating in geospatial related research. • Keep abreast of innovative technologies in the field of GIS, remote sensing and cartography. • Perform other tasks related to tasks in the section, as requested. The internship is for three months starting in April 2024 with an opportunity for extension, pending the needs of the office. Internships with Offices of the United Nations Secretariat are UNPAID and full-time, i.e., 5 days per week (40 hours). Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. • A demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views; and a keen interest in the countries covered by the illicit crop monitoring programme, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Lao PDR, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria and Peru. • Degree in the field of geography, cartography, geographic information management, environmental science, statistics, development studies, or related field. • Knowledge of the principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data management, and statistical/analytical skills is required. • Knowledge of machine learning techniques for modelling geospatial and RS data is an asset. • Be computer literate in standard software applications; working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point is required. Practical experience with GIS and web mapping applications (e.g. ArcGIS PRO, ArcGIS Online, QGIS) is required. Knowledge of a programming language (e.g. Python) is desirable. Knowledge of cloud-based platform (e.g., Earth Engine) is an asset. • Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. “No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
